The Legal Studies HSC 2014 Preparation Thread

I will be bullshitting three entire essays. But I'm sure you'll so amazingly tomorrow! Definitely a possible state rank

    Pressure & Rate of reaction

No, that's temperature (I know we're done now, but some kids might read this later). Pressure is a factor only in reactions involving gases. Increasing pressure doesn't introduce more energy to the system. Rather, what happens is that the system shifts to reduce pressure by moving toward the...

    General Thoughts: Chemistry

The debate about the ethanol question is just getting stupid. If you gave any use of ethanol, explained it's impact on society and the chemistry behind it with relevant equations you have answered the question. If you answer the question you get the marks. The end.

    General Thoughts: Chemistry

I think your own attitude kind of warranted that. I mean you've been definitively telling people they're wrong and will lose marks with no evidence to support that. Which is just kinda mean, people are already stressed enough without that.

    General Thoughts: Chemistry

Agreed. I thought the CSSA trial was pretty easy but then my teacher applied the marking criteria absolutely brutally. I think there will be a ridiculously anal marking criteria applied mercilessly. That scares me a little more than a hard paper to be honest because I find it so hard to predict...

    General Thoughts: Chemistry

Any use of ethanol is fine as long as you backed it up. If they only wanted you to talk about ethanol as a solvent or a fuel they'd have specified that. Do not listen to anyone who tells you otherwise because they are either confused or trying to make you feel bad for no reason.

    General Thoughts: Chemistry

Dehydration of ethanol to Ethene and then polymerisation/alkylation/halogenation is a totally valid use of ethanol. Anyone who wrote that is going to read what you just said and stress because they think they've made a mistake. More people probably went with solvent/fuel (I know it's what I...

    Yeah that's totally valid.

    Calculation Questions!

Loooolllll, stoich ratio sulfur to sulfate 1:1, obviously n (sulfur) = n (sulfate). If anyone didn't get that the night before the HSC and I had to type all that out than it was never going to help them anyway. I got the right answer, so laugh all you like.

    General Thoughts: Chemistry

Yeah, exactly, I think they just wanted to make it clear you didn't need to put all the equations in to get full marks, one was enough. But yeah it just demonstrates what's happening quicker than writing does, and I was running out of time and opted for that instead.

    General Thoughts: Chemistry

It just adds to my explanation. My teacher is a HSC marker and he was relieved I out in all three, it just illustrates the point. They don't take away marks for including extra equations, they just might not award extra marks.

    General Thoughts: Chemistry

I included all of them, it's not like they'll deduct marks. I didn't see the 'in a sequence' part though, so sad right now. I was thinking there wasn't much work for 5 marks there!

    General Thoughts: Chemistry

Argh me too, I wrote down the margins for two markers (the supervisers were taking too long to keep getting booklets, and wouldn't just give me a stack at a time smh), so stupid. Then I wrote two extra pages on ethanol and didn't even answer the question fully so good on me.

    General Thoughts: Chemistry

I did the zinc/chromium one. I didn't even have time to write a reaction equation but I do remember that hydrogen gas was evolved. 7 marker I only wrote one page, I'm so screwed holy shit. Hopefully chem of art aligns/moderates/whatever it is well because I screwed it pretty bad in some places...

    General Thoughts: Chemistry

I didn't have much time to do chem of art (left myself 30 minutes whyyy) and I didn't know much about the prac. The question on problems with it? God I had nothing. I said the positive pressure from the hydrogen escaping through the cotton wool might not be enough to exclude oxygen and I also...

I did not study that prac at all. Nor did I do it. gg.

    Calculation Questions!

Well if you've got barium sulfate forming in the precipitation reaction there's going to be sulfate in the fertiliser, yes. But the question says there's sulfur in the fertiliser, and that would be in the form of some kind of sulfate (probably K2SO4). That's just assumed knowledge from having...

    Predictions for Chemistry 2014 HSC?

Complete combustion does not involve the emission of CO (equations for complete and incomplete combustion here). In the human body, CO combines with haemoglobin to produce carboxyhaemoglobin, which prevents the haemoglobin from transporting oxygen to body tissues, thus leading to comas, seizures...

    Predictions for Chemistry 2014 HSC?

Never did this dot point in class or at home; teacher said they'd never assess it haha
