I put that too. It was a real "WTF?" question... :p I_F

    Terms of a geometric series

Since multiplying a negative number by itself doesn't change its magnitude (only the sign), it's fine to take the absolute value of these types of questions as long as you remember the signs. :) I_F

    Economics Competition 2006

"What is stagflation?" - I guessed that one right. But did anyone get this one? I think I remembered it right, but I'll be peeved if it was "an argument for free trade...." "Which of the following is an argument against free trade in the long run?" - The Principle of Specialisation and...

Do you think your school will finish?

Our 2U Maths class has finished and we've finished the 3U Maths course. Chemistry we'll finish easily (just finished Module 3), Physics we'll get done with a little time to spare (nearly finished Module 3), and English and Economics we should get done in time. The only one I'm unsure about is 4U...

    Jacaranda Physics HSC

Jacaranda is quite good, but there are a few little errors and some dot points are skimmed over. However, it's better than Macmillian, and I quite like the syllabus reference in the front. Overall I think it's the best physics textbook. :) I_F

ext 1 is killing me!! >.<

Not necessarily. n00bi3z's school may have set extremely hard assessment tasks, hence the low marks. Alternatively, another school may set comparatively easy tasks, and students achieve high marks. Straight marks don't always tell the whole story. I_F

How much will English affect your UAI?

Sorry - I should have been clearer. I didn't mean to say that it's SAM's fault. I meant that the results it gives would be useless if you didn't use the proper marks. With the proper marks it gives very good estimates. I_F

How much will English affect your UAI?

SAM is rubbish if you use anything except estimates of your aligned marks (which can be guessed from your trial marks). If you put in any of your assessment marks from the start of Year 12 to now you'll get utterly wrong estimates. English is compulsory, and if you don't do well in it your UAI...

Doing badly in 3 unit Maths?

If you want to do engineering, you really, really, really should have 3 unit Maths, and you should work hard to brush it up. Engineering in particular will have a lot of Maths and Physics, though 3 unit isn't so much of a necessity for IT alone. Since you've finished the course now, you should...

    motion problem

Time must be a positive value. There is no such thing as negative time, so you therefore use the positive value (i.e. take the absolute value of the result). I think that in this case, velocity could be positive or negative depending on the direction of the particle, so you use the absolute...

Calculators - which are the best and what do you use?

I have a Casio FX 100s, which is a slightly older model, but I've gotten used to it. It doesn't have the two line display, but it works. :) I_F

    Tangents & Normals to Logs

    You need to use the chain rule and the derivative of an exponential here: d/dx[(e2x + 1)7] = 7(e2x + 1)6.2e2x = 14e2x.(e2x + 1)6 Then derive again (this time using the product rule and chain rule). d/dx[14e2x.(e2x + 1)6] = 14e2x.2e2x.6(e2x + 1)5 + (e2x + 1)6.28e2x = 168e4x(e2x + 1)5 +...

    Chemistry HSC Books

The textbooks don't cover all the dot points; in some cases you're supposed to do some research yourself (i.e. "gather information from secondary sources..."). Textbooks generally provide a lot of stuff that's not in the syllabus because the syllabus is very bare-bones in style, and in a lot of...

    A question about Intergration

The first one. As a general rule of thumb, leave C by itself - don't multiply it by stuff you've taken out. In other words, when you integrate, you don't know what the value of C is, so there isn't any need to multiply it since your result will still be some constant which you don't know. Leave...
