    4U maths destroys confidence

I've always enjoyed learning maths but my enjoyment has been overshadowed by the marks I've received for MX2 through the year. I remember one or two assessments during which I just felt like ripping up the paper and walking out. The best result I've ever got from a internal assessment for MX2...

Um. 'vintage Year'. Go Die. What Does This Mean For Uai?!

If it makes you feel any better, JUAI says that with those marks you would have got exactly 97.20 in the year 2005. Here's a screenshot. Alternatively, wait for a nice surprise tomorrow morning.

    Official HSC results.

Premier's Award = 10 units worth of Band 6 (or E4). I don't know why I'm doubting myself on second thoughts now. Someone please confirm?

    Official HSC results.

Well - take me and my friend as an example. My internal rank in MX2 was 2nd and hers was 1st. These are our HSC results: ssglain exam mark: 99, assessment mark: 97, HSC mark: 98 ssglain's friend exam mark: 97, assessment mark: 99, HSC mark: 98 As you see, because she held an internal rank of 1...

    USYD Combined Medicine Interviews

I got a call from USYD on Tuesday morning to inform me that I'm being invited to an interview for MBBS/B Sc (Adv). Anyone else? To be honest I wasn't expecting interview offers to be released this early because the USYD website says "The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine will select applicants...

Yet again, thank you for answering questions on my behalf. So how are your results? (If you don't mind sharing, of course.)

    Trigonometric equations

    3. [The trick here is to view sinx and cosx each as a pronumeral, say, y and z. Then you can rewrite the equation as y² - 3yz - 4z² = 0 and factorise accordingly --> (y - 4z)(y + z) = 0] sin²x - 3sinxcosx - 4cos²x = 0 (0 < x < 360) (sinx - 4cosx)(sinx + cosx) = 0 sin x = 4cosx or sinx = -...

    another quick inverse trig question

Well, see the only MX2 part was knowing ∫uv' = uv - ∫u'v. Once you hit ∫sin-1x dx = xsin-1x - ∫x/√(1 - x²) dx, everything else that follows relies on no more than MX1 integration.

    another quick inverse trig question

Yeah, I also thought about writing it by hand and scanning but this didn't take too long. Although there are a few typos, now that I've taken the time to read it over.

    another quick inverse trig question

Since integration by parts has been mentioned, I will briefly explain it and show you how to integrate sin-1x using IBP. Basically, IBP works by the reverse of the product rule used in differentiation, so the concept should be fairly easy to understand even if you don't do MX2...

SAM - just out of curiosity

Is that because of lack of data or lack of people to process the data? In the latter case, I'm sure there are plenty of BOS'ers - especially fresh class of '07 graduates like myself - who'd like to help.

    Polynomial problem

Let the roots of x³ + 2x + 1 = 0 be a, b, c. The question requires us to find a cubic polynomial whose roots are a², b², c². I can think of two methods to do this. Since the question is posted under MX1, let's start with the method that uses knowledge from 2U/MX1 courses. Method 1: Consider x³...

To Drop or not to drop?

As far as your UAI is concerned, it is perhaps better for you to be ranked 1st in General Maths than say bottom 30% in 2U. However, if you want to study a uni degree that lists 2U as assumed knowledge, you might be in a bit of trouble.

    Stumped... (with occaisional updates)

Q1. You're on the right track. The only problem is that you used the formula for sum of AP. The series you have there is clearly a GP with a = 20, r = 1/5. Q2. Are you sure you used the correct formula? Edit: In case you forgot, this is the formula: S = [a(r^n - 1)]/(r - 1)

    3 sciences?

I didn't think you are allowed to pick up EE1 at the start of Yr 12. Nevertheless, I agree with Harkaraj's examples - a friend of mine did modern+ancient+ext history, and did brilliantly. Why not take all the science subjects if you are interested in science and, most importantly, are good at...

    Binomial Theorem

You're more than welcome. Well, as you saw, those three questions were all solved by essentially the same principal - writing out the general term of the binomial expansion and using this to find specific terms. I'm afraid that all I can offer on the forum are solutions and basic...

    Binomial Theorem

ii. The expansion of (1 + ax + bx²)(1 + x)^10 in ascending powers of x begins with the terms 1 + x + x². Determine the values of a,b. This one can be done by basically the same principle, but in addition to finding the term independent of x, we must now also find the terms in x and x². Then...
