    Question about assessment mark moderating

I don't have any information about IPT at the moment, I'm sorry.

would my classmates' marks affect mine??

This is almost correct. If the person who misses the exam was ranked first on assessments, only the top exam mark is used to estimate their (missing) examination mark. Assume students A, B and C have school assessment marks of 80, 75 and 70. On the day of the exam, student A is very ill and...

    Question about assessment mark moderating

Yes. This depends on the performance of the other students in your class. Try it out yourself here. Yes, it is still possible to achieve a mark of 90+. Your trial marks have nothing to do with the marks reported by the Board. A trial mark of 87.5% does not mean you're a band 5...

    MX1 raw for band 6.

I stand by my original post. The fact is, if the band E4 cut-off for a particular exam paper is a raw mark of 57/84, and band E4 corresponds to aligned marks from 90-100, you have a range of 27 raw marks being squashed into a range of 10 aligned marks. So, on that particular exam paper, in...

    MX1 raw for band 6.

    It depends on the exam paper. For the 2005 exam: 80/84 --> 95/100 70/84 --> 93/100 For the 2004 exam: 80/84 --> 95/100 70/84 --> 92/100 For the 2001 exam: 80/84 --> 96/100 70/84 --> 94/100 But you can't know what your raw mark for a particular exam is likely to be until...

    MX1 raw for band 6.

For the 2005 exam, the band E4 cut-off was 57/84 (68%). For the 2004 exam, the band E4 cut-off was between 56/84 and 61/84 (61%-73%). For the 2001 exam, the band E4 cut-off was between 45/84 and 53/84 (54%-63%). Remember that you can't know whether you're capable of achieving any of...

Chemistry and physics - raw needed for band 6.

For the 2005 chemistry exam, the band 6 cut-off was 78/100, which was achieved by 8.3% of the state. But you won't know whether you're capable of achieving that raw mark unless you sit the 2005 exam and mark it yourself. The cut-offs are different for every exam.

    Teacher's Bullshit or Sam's bullshit?

This used to be correct, but since around 2002 it's no longer the case. See paragraph [3.2.7] of the 2008 scaling report: It used to be the case that only raw marks of 100% would be scaled to the maximum possible scaled mark. Nowadays each distribution of scaled marks is stretched so...

    mx2 compared to 2u and mx1

With respect to the 2004 Extension 2 HSC exam, the raw cut-off mark for band E4 was approx 72/120 (60%). You'd need to sit that particular exam to know whether that raw mark on that paper is feasible for you or not though. You can't just look at your school mark.

    Teacher's Bullshit or Sam's bullshit?

This is generally true but not in relation to courses that are capped. Senior science is usually capped. You also can't test the truth of the statement by using SAM - because SAM shows aligned marks compared to scaled marks, not raw (or standardised) marks compared to scaled marks...

Impact of new FOI legislation on obtaining raw marks?

The new Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW) will make it impossible to request access to any data relating to the HSC, including raw and scaled marks. This is because of the extremely broad language that has been used in the exceptions for the DET and the universities...

    Penalties for publishing school rankings

James These are difficult questions to answer, largely because the legislation is unclear and its passage through Parliament was based on some misconceptions. You have hit the nail on the head in terms of your analysis though. There appears to be some tension between the words used and the...

    Penalties for publishing school rankings

Yep that's correct. Obviously they will have to rank all the schools themselves in order to determine who is in the top 10%, but they can only publish the top ranks.

    Penalties for publishing school rankings

The NSW Government has today passed legislation which imposes penalties on people in NSW who publish rankings or comparisons of particular schools based on school results without the consent of the principals of the schools involved. There is an exception for the publication of the rankings of...
