    Inequalities

I don't think this is correct. The identity you gave simply comes from (x-y)^2 \geq 0 , and this is by no means the inequality you mentioned.

    Rep: for or against poll

Weren't you the one who commented something like "Where the fuck is my rep?" when it was removed?

    How's everyone's trial prep going?

Looking really forward to Maths Extension 2 trials! The teacher said that he wrote a 'super duper hard question' and I'm really curious to see what it is.

    For uni students:

I don't really agree. Having studied a fair few Undergraduate subjects informally on top of my own school studies, I find this hard to believe. The thing is at University, you could just bludge and scrape passes, and still be awarded the Bachelor degree. However if you bludge at School, you...

    Velocity/Displacement and time of motion

I have no idea what the question is asking for because the question wants total time of motion, implying that we need to let v=0. However as you said, there does not exist a value of x such that v=0. From where did you get this question?

1992 Sydney Grammar School Paper: Triangle geometry problem

Assuming your working is correct, a/b = tan alpha and a/c = tan alpha, so a/b = a/c, so b = c. If b = c, then b/c = 1. Sub b/c = 1 into your ratio for b/c then solve for the unique solution of alpha, then sub back into the expressions for a/b and a/c, then get your ratios.

Actually, the method Carrotsticks had over there can be done using 2 unit Maths methods. All that it has is: 1. Summation notation. 2. Use of the discriminant. 3. To understand where equality occurs, just observe -b_i/a_i for i E N. All of these things are well within the 2 unit syllabus...

C.S Inequality! Wasn't aware of a solution that was even within the scope of the Mathematics Advanced (2 unit) syllabus.

This is how I think ATAR should be calculated.

Alternatively, you could just get full marks in every exam you do such that the calculation method of ATAR becomes a non-issue because either way you are first in the state.

Is it possible to be among the best without coaching?

Well, what do you consider to be 'coaching'? Does receiving extra help from a teacher during recess/lunch count as coaching? Does Olympiad Training count as coaching? Does attending a Holiday Seminar constitute coaching? Hell, if I attend the BOS Study Day and the seminar, will that be...
