Haha, yeah, a lot of the people do that. I think our median uai this year was about 99.35 or so...that means about 80 odd people got over 99.35, which leads to lots of 99+ marks so yeah, a lot of .xx. But we also have some lower uai people, our lowest uai this year was 77 i think.

How is it even possible to get a 77 UAI at Ruse?

The person who got that uai didn't select the right subjects, he picked bad scaling subjects. Besides, if you don't work, then obviously you won't do well and look at it this way, the median uai for the state is about 70...

Cool, advanced science is quite a good degree. Are you majoring in quantitative analysis in order to go into finance? Haha, it's funny how they don't use the "law building" for law, just like how i am getting a few law lectures in the physics building :S. I made an awesome timetable though, finish class at 12pm pretty much everyday! I feel sorry for those people who bunch up their studies all in a few days, much harder to absorb the material i believe, at least that's what uni students tell me...

But you have free days right? i don't get any free days! Lol, science and research doesn't really pay well if you live in aus but finance pays heaps. If you are good enough and major in Quantitative Analysis, you can get half a mill a year easily at Macq bank. It's not really business or commerce, it's more developing mathematical models. You must've done quite well in the hsc to get into the advanced science course though so well done. Cut off was mid 90's i think?

u haven't got free days? well me too, my shortest day is from 9 - 2....so....yea..... and i think adv.science at UNSW was 92 this year; i was originally enrolled in USYD's advanced science course but got into this one through a late round offer - it's basically because i think unsw offers a better adv science course. Alot of ppl have told me that research will get me shit all in the future, so i'm just using adv.science to prepare me for the Gamsat exams ---> dentistry.

and i don't mind business and that sort of thing, i've just never really got into it :)

AHHHH!!!!!! :O Don't do dentistry, it has the highest suicide rate among all jobs. Wouldn't you get bored looking down people's mouths all day??????

yeh, a few ppl have pointed out the negatives involved such as looking into stinky mouths all day.....but the money that u could earn keeps me very interested :) i've also got the option of being an engineer, but i don't really like maths or computing = future unclear
um.....suicide rate? lol

wot would u like to do when u finish?

Well, i have a very vague idea at the moment but probably becoming a barrister or going into finance/accounting. You see, the cool thing about a comm/law degree is that it is quite general so it opens up a huge range of options for you. I can go into the commerce side, which encompasses accounting, finance, actuarial and economics or i can go into the law side, which will lead to a job as a barrister/solicitor. I can also combine the two and become like a CEO, because its really important that company executives understand the law, in order to ensure that all company actions are well within the law.

NO DENTISTRY THOUGH! :p

You really should consider finance, the industry loves people with strong mathematical and scientific backgrounds and it pays fantastically well too. Dentistry will take how many more years? I don't mean just finishing the degree but also the internship etc. (everything you need to do before you can open a private practice...)

geez, ur making commerce and law sound really interesting now! :) can u do finance within adv science? i haven't looked yet, but that would require me to do a combined science/commerce degree wouldn't it? and i'd have to drop down to B.Science cause there isn't a B.Sci(adv)/B.Com.

Since I never did yr11 or yr12 business or economics subjects, do u think i'd struggle, or would it be a fresh start?

dentistry would be another 4years after this degree, and after that i can go straight into clinical practice or open my own.

Hey, sorry for the slow reply...internet has its problems of late. I don't think you would struggle if you did a combined science and commerce course because the commerce side in university has a much greater focus on mathematics, especially differential equations to analyse aggregate demand/supply, phillips curves and a range of other things. I think that you can still do fine as long as you put the work in...how did you go in maths?

i got 89/100 in 2unit and 44/50 in 3unit (just missed out again on a band 6). I'm not going to doubt my maths at this stage because i haven't tried uni maths yet, but it just 'seems' to be difficult. I'm doing Maths1A in semester1 so i'll c how that goes. But there's no-way i'd go for actuary style maths

Fair enough. People told me that uni maths is based a lot less on formulas and the questions require a lot more thought...basically meaning that questions are indirect and you need to find out what method and formulas to use, they won't be clear.

Hope you enjoy O-week! :D

Theres a story going around where two students got the same marks in their subjects

James Ruse Bludger: 60UAI

Other student: Mystery Uai
Do you mean same HSC marks? That differential may be possible if the two students got the same hsc marks due to the wonderful scaling james ruse students get :p

I think it is BS then because the person who got the uai in the 70s stopped caring a lot earlier than year 11, i think it started in year 7.
