Hey everyone, enjoy your first year. I am doing accounting and finance.

Shinji is right, fins1612 is pretty boring. fins1613 is really good, but the lecturer was terrible.

i have alot of people asking me at unsw and PM'ing me saying by when do i have to pick my majors. you guys dont pick majors like you think you do.

majors are recognised when you do a bunch of subjects ( generally 42 units of credit, each subject is USUALLY 6 units of credit, so somewhat 7 subjects) etc. this is explained more in the handbook

but if you guys wanna know whats a good elective to do, pick something like FINS1612, FINS1613 or LEGT1711 because these subjects are cross recognised a few majors like finance, business law and accounting if your opting for an CA or CPA.

I've just got a few questions to ask about the B Comm/Eco degree (and in general). Im not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask but I may aswell ask my fellow commerce people i figure.

Firstly (someone mentioned it I believe), do any majors share common subjects? If so, can one take these common subjects and have them count towards both majors?

Secondly... About the B Comm/eco in particular. This degree allows you to have three majors. There are a few options but it states that people can have "one major from the field of economics and two from commerce" or something. It doesnt say that one can have 2 from eco (say economics/econometrics), yet it doesnt explicitly say that you cannot either. Is there anyone that can clarify this please?

Thirdly... General education subjects. Do these count towards my required UOC for my course? (192 UOC).

Fourthly... for those that are currently in University, do you find it more convenient to condense your classes or spread them out?

And finally a personal oppinion... I am considering a career in economics (though i am far from certain at the current time), what majors would you suggest me undertaking? Also is it wise to take all 3 possible majors based on my career plan, or to diversify my majors incase I decide on a career switch in the future.

Oh and by the way

[edit]:La Divina;; you shouldn't just be looking at getting a job after graduating. that's one of the hardes times for you to get a jjob after graduation. You should look for internships, cadetships, etc that let you gain experience! =]
She is currently a cadet ^^

Thanks for any upcoming answers, any input would be largely appreciated. Im the only person in my school doing this course (in fact the vast majority of my friends got mystery UAIs and such), so I'm pretty blind as far as university goes.

P.s. And one other thing i forgot, I feel stupid asking this, but Is there anywhere I can find an actual list online of the subjects that contribute towards each major in the faculty? Once again, thanks.

Sorry.... Another question...

ACCT1501 Accounting and Financial Management 1A
ACCT1511 Accounting and Financial Management 1B
ECON1101 Microecomomics 1
ECON1102 Macroeconomics 1
ECON1202 Quantitative Methods A*
ECON1203 Quantitative Methods B*

As you prolly know those are the compulsary subjects for the bcom as well as bcom/beco... I see that there are four eco related subjects there... Do those count towards my economics major?

Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, but I'm quite clueless, and the rediculously small font of the UNSW "handbook" is torturing my eyes.

Firstly, they count only once I believe. No double dipping.

Secondly, not sure.

Thirdly, yes they do count and are mandatory for B comm/B econ

Fourly, condensed imo. Although I've only ever had 3 days/week at uni :D

Personal question, depends which field of economics you're interested in. I'm just majoring in pure Economics and IB for my B comm/B econ degree. I decided to just do 2 majors because I enjoy the (relative) freedom of being able to pick electives.

And I do believe the core courses count towards your econ major, however I have never confirmed this with anyone. It would be pretty silly if it didn't though.

Hope this helps.

To Ricenmoo:

No, those does not contribute to your eco major since the required courses for it are:

ECON2101 Microeconomics 2 (6 UOC)
ECON2102 Macroeconomics 2 (6 UOC)
ECON2206 Introductory Econometrics (6 UOC)
ECON2207 Econometric Methods (6 UOC)

However you can say those first year core courses lead to your eco major since ECON1101 and ECON1102 are prerequisites for ECON2101 and ECON2102

Then you choose the number of optional courses depending on whether you are doing a single or double major.

Here's the website:
http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/specialisations/2008/Economics.html

Remember to scroll down and click the economics section near the BOTTOM.

Well, when I looked at the online handbook for 2005/2006 (i think as well), it specifically stated that you could choose 2 majors from economics and 1 from commerce, OR 2 majors from commerce and one from ecnomics, and the other minors and what not were the other options. Anyway, since then, for 2007/2008, they no longer state that as an option. So I am assuming that you cannot choose 2 majors from economics and one from commerce anymore. But the best thing for you to do would be to ring ring the people at unsw ;)

About the major choosing, you should first determine what majors would be useful for your career. You may find that two out of the three would be sufficient, and then choose the third as a backup for something you could fall back on if your current career plan doesn't work out. But keep in mind that you also need to have interest in whatever you choose etc. etc. This is only an opinion and not informed advice :p

Anyways, Good luck!!

I just want to double-check something here. I got accepted into B.Economics and I want to major in Economics (obviously) and Finance. I'm doing my enrolment now...I've put down:

ACCT1501
ECON1101
ECON1202
FINS1612

Is that ok? Give me some assurance! :p

Uh.. haven't you accepted your offer yet?

If you did then proceed to part 2, where you enter your personal details and do other enrollment shits such as choosing courses and timetables.
