Well yes overall there is a positive effect on the economy of the host country. The benefit the olympics provide is not easily measured though.

well, actually we didn't. we just broke even. at least our sporting facilities are still being used, though - the ones in athens are sitting around, doing nothing. the benefits of the olympics are things like publicity for your city and nation, infrastructure and so on. not economic benefits. (this is according to a recent time mag)

The government may have broke even, but tourism made heaps.

Anyway on the subject of finances, I havent checked the figures but i am quite sure Sydney did eventually breakeven in 2002. And the benefits of an olympics simply cannot be measured. Sure your actual games operating budget may be in the red, but think of it as a government injection into the economy. Tourism boomed, sales of merchadise, hotel rooms, etc etc the list goes on
