Hi all,

Feel free to discuss any questions/answers to the 2014 Extension 1 BOS Trial in this thread! Were there any questions you couldn't get out? Any questions in particular that you liked/disliked?

I'll answer any questions you have about the paper in general, but I'll let the users discuss solutions in here. Myself and Trebla will give hints if students have difficulty with any problems =)

Official solutions will be posted in this thread some time next week.

The link to the exam is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2hn6ypiv5qwuuu0/2014 BOS Trial Mathematics Extension 1.pdf?dl=0

Is it just me or doesn't 16 c) strongly resemble this past hsc question?

I think it's just me, but I'm not sure....
It is quite a similar problem, but the approaches are totally different. When dealing with probability questions involving infinity, it's not uncommon to wind up back to known special constants like pi or e.

Funnily enough, both their proof and my provided one use two differeing definitions of the constant 1/e.

I used the definition

and their one used

Did anybody get out the projectile motion problem or the binomial super sums problem?

Also for the circle geometry problem, did people realise that you had to prove collinearity first before doing anything else?

yes i did both!

for the binomial one i just proved LHS = 2^n - 1
That is pretty much it =)

Also, good work with getting the projectile/SHM one out. I was very concerned that students would not understand the scenario I was trying to convey.

How about the perms/combs problem?

I was very close to putting it in the Extension 2 exam, but I figured that the 3U students may appreciate it.

i didn't quite get the absolute last part, but i thought the question was very neat.
