tbh you have to know that school ranking does not affect your atar. you can still get into a selective school and still do really bad you know. I know a family friend who went to Baulkhaum hills high school, but didn't get into his desired course cause he got a terrible score. at the end of the day tbh, its just whoever works the hardest
I thought it helped with scaling yk e.g two people got the same raw score one of them goes to selective the other a priv. The selective person would get a higher atar

Nah the person who goes to a low-socio economical skl gets a higher ATAR bc they get extra ATAR boost points (depends on the skl) extra ATAR points (eg my skl gives 3 extra ATAR points if u get a 92+ ATAR)

but tbh yh towards the end of the day u cant compare to selective n private

Wouldnt a selective only get high bc there are other people perfoming better / worse internally? Not bc of the actual institution right?

yea you're right, it's because of the students the ranking rises
I genuinely think this selective system is fucking werid, like there shouldnt be differences based on the people around you and your own work should be considered your own internally. Externally makes sense bc youre against everyone but internally kinda gives a disadvantage.

Fr I hate that part of the education system.

And why are they segrating smart or academically better students apart from everyone else? Most of them (not all) are grinded by their parents to do well, not the education provided.

yes exactly! i used to go to penrith and people really glorified it but no one knows the several restricaiton when it comes to picking subjects. its rlly bad to the point where comprehensive schools choose stuff we couldnt choose and ended up getting higher atars. i think most schools arent like this though but i just hated the fact that people really thouhgt penrith was a good school. very toxic, limited trains to take, poor school too. only good thing about penrith hs is the cold cafeteria water

i think its more so academically better students can have a better opportunity to receive an education that is more well rounded than going to their local zone school ( which can get really bad ). i think its mainly for students who want to acheive better, but don't have the funds to go to a private school ( which is the case for most immigrant families ). which is probably the reason why most students from selective schools are multi-cultural.
The only reason I couldnt go to a selective previously was because I didnt have my PR, so now that I finally do then I can apply. Its so unfair to internation students bc so much fee needs to be paid for private to even have a shot

i felt very guilty when my parents moved me to a expensive private school so i wanna "give back" by studying hard and getting a high atar. aiming to get state rank for math..
No offence here, but no one just casually 'knows' or can 'aim' for it lmao. It just happens. People come into these courses (especially one with really demanding content) with dreams of doing something extraordinary because you 'like' the content and therefore believe a state rank is within reach. Statistically, people don't realise they were in the range to state rank but get it anyway. If you continually make these goals, it is likely you'll become stressed and therefore perform worse to as one who did not enrol with such standards or expectations. Take it from someone who had a decent chance (high mark for both at1s in my old and new school) as an accelerant at the start of the year and fucked their assessment in term 2 to the point where I need to go beyond the effort of the average student in the top 10 to study for the remaining tasks to somewhat salvage what can be saved from my b6 prospects. Do not make expectations. I'm not saying just to u btw, I'm referring to all students in this thread that are moving to senior studies next year or are accelerating. These are years where you'll have much less control. You can let fate decide if your efforts are state ranking level, or make expectations, possibly (or most likely) become stressed and perform badly. Make your parents be proud of your efforts, not your fantasies. Maybe this will direct you through to a state rank anyways. 🤷‍♀️

it has to be illegal, tbh. you can't charge someone like 20,000 to attend a school.
average expenditure for government schools is 20,000 per student, so i reckon if youre going to a private school with better resources 20k is reasonable. def dont want my tax money subsidising private schools (it does anyways)

your parents will be proud of you regardless if they see youre trying hard. i think a better way to "give back" to your parents, or at least something that is equally important is to spend time with them and talk with them. i hang out with my dad and mum as much as i can, i talk with them, they appreciate it, as do i. i talk with them about how im going in school, how theyre doing in work, they appreciate that. let them know you love them, theyll appreciate that. your parents will be more happy if you love them and hang out with them, more than a one off state rank.
