Oh yeah and when proving that root 2 is irrational what are the prerequisites? I want to actually learn it instead of copying someone else's working out.
theres no real prerequisites
id say the most important thing you need to know is what a rational number is even is defined as, and let that definition be equal to root 2
then go from there
another thing that may be helpful to think about is what does it mean for a number to be even, and what even numbers really are in their simplest form

the nice thing about proofs is that they make you think about math from its veryyy foundations, so its not really anything new

from the perspective of an average person of some obscure ext 2 proof
welll okay you can look into 'the language of proof' which is an ext 2 topic- it might be worth briefly looking into the different sets of numbers, such as rational, integers, natural etc
and also looking at what even/odd numbers and integers can be written as at their simplest form (its all simple stuff so dont worry)
then look into the method used for proofs by contradiction

then hopefully you should be good to go? ☺

what are the main topics I must look at?
its in the topic of proof. if you're looking in the cambridge textbook, id say to skim over chapter 2B (number proofs) and most importantly 2C (proof by contrapositive/contradiction)
