"New teaching methods will see the University make better use of new communication technologies, including the Internet.
"UWS is set to become a significant research institution offering top class degrees to meet the needs of a region that is home to one in ten Australians," Professor Reid says.
UWS is the 30th public university in Australia to decide to increase HECS fees since the Federal Government allowed universities to introduce 'premium' HECS for students commencing their courses in 2005.
The 25% HECS increase will be introduced at UWS in 2006. It will not apply to students who commenced their studies before 2005, or to students studying teaching and nursing subjects which are exempt by government legislation.
The increased HECS rates will add $962 per year to an arts or humanities degree; $1,370 per year to a business, science and allied health degree; and $1,604 per year to a law degree.
HECS is a debt incurred by students. It does not have to be repaid to the Government until the graduate earns more than $35,000 per year.
UWS was created in 1989 with 9,000 students. Today it is the sixth largest university in Australia with 36,000 students and it plans to grow to more than 45,000 students over the next decade.
