I'm currently in year 10, and in a 5.3 math class, and was wondering whether it is a good idea to take 3 unit maths in year 11, and if it is too hard drop down to 2 units in year 12.

If you don't try then you'll never know, and if you find 2unit too easy, then you'll be annoyed at yourself for not doing it.

Yes it is always possible to drop down to 2U in Year 12 after doing 3U in Year 11. However I don't recommend dropping down, as 3U Math isn't too difficult (but still challenging enough to be enjoyable). You could do the 2U HSC in Year 11 (get it over and done with it) although it wouldn't count for anything if you chose to do 4U in Year 12. From what I've heard from the Year 12s in my school 4U Maths is a really good course (60% of the year does it). Definitely do 3U in Year 11.
