Liberals gather for council meeting

The three-day council will debate 45 resolutions, ranging from a Victorian call for the federal government to take action against the NSW and West Australian state Labor governments for refusing to abolish a range of indirect taxes to a Young Liberals call for all foreign investment restrictions to be abolished.

The NSW branch wants a ceremonial military guard for Parliament House, the Lodge and Government House, with the troops dressed in replica uniforms of the Great War Lighthorsemen.
Bugger the Great War... I say that we all try and come up with our own ideas as to what such a ceremonial guard unit would wear.

A few suggestions of my own:
- the garb of a 'frontier' settler from the 19th century
- business attire

Mine aren't that good, but I'm sure that someone else will come up with something worth a laugh or two.

They would wear female guardsmen?

Lets see it is Canberra so something light weight to help them show how tough they are... lets go really traditional and have them wearing ceremonial Aboriginal dress, from all around Australia, especially the tropics :p.

Females in khakis destroy any sense of femininity. And I like femininty, especially in women. Look at all the American servicewomen in Iraq, they're ugly.

For nostalgia's sake, the guardsmen need pickelhaubed helmets, epaulettes and shiny bayonets. I know pickelhaubed helmets were not Australian WW1 uniform, but they were much cooler than the slouch hats. They should also be made to take an oath of allegiance to the Queen to annoy republicans.

Any guard would be irretrievably at odds with the building. The first step is to build a glorious spiralling bastion of authority on top of the current tomb-like abomination. Although the guilt-ridden Fraser-inspired design of the PMO, connotating rabbit holes and the Fuhrer bunker, must remain.

But to hell with the notions of riff-raff being able to climb above the chambers (even though they no longer can, thank god).
Once we instill people with the primal truth of "Government, up here. You down there", a guard (clad in magnificent robes of Hellinic suggestion) comes naturally.

But if we're doing that surely we can just get the tent embassy to provide the guard?

Yeah, sure. Rascist a.hole. 'All Aboriginals do all day is wear Female guardsmen.' Outrageous.

Edit: *C sharp* (serious note), the War Memorial was intended to be a kind of guard for the house. From parliament, it reminds you of the diggers who were fooled, making you feel guarded.

There would be controversy within the Guard as to the political allegiances of every guardsman. No doubt should the Guard be formed today, the PM would prefer guardsmen of a a Liberal Party leaning.

Then, should a Labor government come about, the Labor PM will demand the sacking of all guardsmen and have them replaced with different guardsmen of an appropiate ideological disposition.
