Hi there I only did 2U math and got 87 and thus will be taking Math1011 General Maths 1B in semester 1, and I was wondering If I would be okay with the content in Discrete Math's in Semester 1? Or should I just do 2 Electives + Higher Computing + Math1011 to fill up my 4 subject requirements for semester 1?

Also I was considering combining my degree with an Arts degree but didn't get the option to combine during enrolment... Do combined degrees start on the second year?

I've looked at the Handbook for the CS/Arts combined degree and under specialisations there doesnt seem to be any of the specialisations that you can end up with in a normal CS degree such as AI, Robotics, E-commerce etc. yet it says under the 3rd year course outline "Plus Level 3/4 Computer Science Electives (24 UOC)" Which is the same as the single degree therefore you should be able to end up with a specialisation in one of the fields mentioned before right?

Thanks in advance

Alright thanks for the replies guys! darkwolfzx you make it sound like discrete mathematics is an elective but I thought it is part of the core course? Or were you just referring to Semester 1?
Oh and zagadka when can i apply to do the double degree?

According to this: http://www.eng.unsw.edu.au/current/transfer/schedule.htm you can transfer through the engo school for cs/arts but you have to wait until s2 2008 for them to process everything or maybe you can get permission start arts subs already if you want.

i think you missed the deadline for session 1 but you could apply for a session 2 transfer sometime during session 1 i think, check out that eng website
Yep your right about that :) Applications closed before I even got my offer =P, I'll keep my eyes out for next semester :] Won't matter like you said as the Credit point would be transferred as well.

Okay so I've calculated that to just do the core course + 24 UOC of level 3 courses to get a specialisation you need 81 credit points for computer science. And since the CS/Arts Course gives 84 UOC for both CS and Arts I would have 3 pts left over for CS then another 24 points either. Can I elect to put the 24 UOC in CS and use them as electives to do a minor in another field?

Wait a minute isn't the computer science program structure for year 1 include math 1a, math 1b and discrete maths as core courses for all students? What will happen to students who take MATH1011 will they still need to do them.
Sorry for this noob question  im also going to do computer science but combined with arts and I also recieved a band 5 for maths..

on the CS sheet I got from advisory day it says if you Don't meet the recommended level for Math 1131 you should take

1. MATH 1011 General Maths 1B in Semester 1
2. Math 1131 Maths 1A in Semester 2
3. Math 1231 Math 1B in Summer semester which is during your summer holidays.

And since Math 1011 is not actually part of the CS course no marks/credit points go towards your degree apparently. And I guess Discrete math must be taken if offered in the summer semester as well since Math 1131 is a prerequisite...

Discrete Maths are logical mathematics, and required nothing more than basic algebra and a logical mind. E.g. finding a formula for Fibonnaci sequence requires manipulating surds and some other rules. I don't think you even need 4U maths for this so don't worried about what marks you get in highschool.

For Maths 1A, 4U maths helps with complex numbers and trigonometry. However if you spend more time in the first few weeks you should be able to handle the workload. If you can enrol, do Maths 1A over the General Maths one as doing the latter one doesn't guanrantee anything for Maths 1A.
