That's interesting.
Amount of times Optus has been down for me this year = twice. Once in the middle of the night, as well, and they advertised it before hand.
The consistent speed that I actually get compared to my poor neighbour who has Telstra is insane. Not only is he always ringing up to borrow the net, but he's always on msn complaining about how the cable slows down. I initially thought that he was just bitching (how can cable slow down?), then I went over there. In peak-hour, he gets a d/l max of about 40 kb/s. No joke.
If he ever rings up and complains about Telstra's 'consistently fast internet', the person on the other end says that 40kb/s is actually 'fast', and to ring back if it drops below it.
The issue of Optus being owned overseas, I don't really give a damn. I have never been put through to a foreign call centre. Never. Then again, I've only had to ring about 4 or 5 times since the 6 years I've had it -- account changes mean that I had to ring up. Once it was down and I rang up, and they said that the network would be back in a couple of hours. It was.
Not only that, but now we get 24 gb download in our off-peak time, so you start up your downloader before you go to bed, and turn it off when you wake up. Then again, you do get 12 gb in on-peak time, so it's not a big issue.
Like I said, it's never down, and the speed is consistently good. I've been playing CS with three of my family-members using laptops through a wireless router, and I still never got a ping over 80 in Aussie servers, 180 in American East-coast, and 200 in West Coast. When it's just me using it, I get a ping of about 20, 80, and 120, respectively.
Personally, I'll let other people 'buy Australian' for me. Suckers.
And Terriblespellor -- everyone who uses Telstra's lines DO pay for its use, just like Telstra pays when it uses American satellites.
