I doubt they'll extend the network for one potential customer. Just go ADSL.

1. They will not extend the cable at all - unless they announce that they will be, which they wouldn't do just because you asked them too.

2. Optus is gay. Foreign owned shit. All non-telstra ISP's should be exterminated - specifically for this reason that you have just said. Telstra spends money installing the infrastructure, only to have leeches come along and use it without paying a cent or participating in its construction. Vermin.

3. Go to here http://whirlpool.net.au/ and enter your phone number and it will tell you if you are elidgable for gAyDSL.

4. else try wireless or satelitte.

i think other ISPs DO pay money to use it, however they are claiming its too expensive. But your right they dont pay for the contruction of the cables and exchanges.

There's something called a monopoly.
Moreover, other ISPs do pay for access through Telstra wholesale. What are you talking about?

You can see why they're claiming that it's too expensive when Telstra wholesales out at one price then charge a lower price than what they're selling at.

That's interesting.

Amount of times Optus has been down for me this year = twice. Once in the middle of the night, as well, and they advertised it before hand.

The consistent speed that I actually get compared to my poor neighbour who has Telstra is insane. Not only is he always ringing up to borrow the net, but he's always on msn complaining about how the cable slows down. I initially thought that he was just bitching (how can cable slow down?), then I went over there. In peak-hour, he gets a d/l max of about 40 kb/s. No joke.

If he ever rings up and complains about Telstra's 'consistently fast internet', the person on the other end says that 40kb/s is actually 'fast', and to ring back if it drops below it.

The issue of Optus being owned overseas, I don't really give a damn. I have never been put through to a foreign call centre. Never. Then again, I've only had to ring about 4 or 5 times since the 6 years I've had it -- account changes mean that I had to ring up. Once it was down and I rang up, and they said that the network would be back in a couple of hours. It was.

Not only that, but now we get 24 gb download in our off-peak time, so you start up your downloader before you go to bed, and turn it off when you wake up. Then again, you do get 12 gb in on-peak time, so it's not a big issue.

Like I said, it's never down, and the speed is consistently good. I've been playing CS with three of my family-members using laptops through a wireless router, and I still never got a ping over 80 in Aussie servers, 180 in American East-coast, and 200 in West Coast. When it's just me using it, I get a ping of about 20, 80, and 120, respectively.

Personally, I'll let other people 'buy Australian' for me. Suckers.

And Terriblespellor -- everyone who uses Telstra's lines DO pay for its use, just like Telstra pays when it uses American satellites.

Cable isn't necessarily the bees knees. I'm looking forward to ADSL+2.

Ooooh yeh *orgasm*. but you know that it's not going to be that simple don't you? :( there has got to be *something* in the way of stopping people from signing up.. Most likely the cost.

I really don't care about speed as such.. it's data transfer caps. I can't stand it how other countries have freakishly high bandwidth caps (if any caps at all) and Australians have approx. 10 GB max.

yeh well if they complain about it being too expensive for them to use Telstra's, nothings stopping them from building their own infrastructure :)

I hate these other companies which rip off telstra, and then their bastard customers follow them because they simply want a cheaper deal. They don't care WHY it's cheaper.

Telstra should have every right to have sole access to the infrastructure that it builds. It shouldn't have to share it with anyone.

If it doesn't have to share its infrastructure, expect to pay $100 for dial up. If everyone builds their own infrastructure, its not only vastly inefficient, it also creates problems of incompatiable standards. Stop slagging the other carriers. If you want overly expensive "broadband", go ahead, stay with Telstra.

As for the original poster, ask about ADSL, I heard some carriers (inc Telstra :p) are experimenting with increasing the max distance for ADSL, although at the cost of reliability and speed. Otherwise, consider something like Unwired or satilite.

It's still owned by the government. They have an interest to ensure competition.
How exactly do other ISPs rip off Telstra? You want to know why its cheaper? Because of competition...

Telstra has to pay for the installation of all the infrastructure, the man power, the resources, the technological know-how, etc.

And what does Joe Blow Inc. ISP since 2005 have to pay for? (Sweet fuck all :)) Some piddly little fee isn't enough to ensure that they come out on the same footing as Telstra. That's why it's unfair.

Telstra pays because they're owned by government, and because of this they're a monopoly power. They have limitless resources because they're owned by the government.

Same footing as Telstra? Is that a joke? I'm sure every ISP would love to be in the same position as Telstra. They can generate revenue by sitting around on their asses all day.

Why is it that a churn request has to cost thirty dollars? It takes all of one minute of work where someone at a computer changes the ADSL codes from the lines. Why is it that Telstra can wholesale at one price, and Bigpond charge a much lower price...?

You're an idiot--without 'Joe Blow Inc.' we'd all be forced to suffer under telstra's low low speeds and high high costs.
