Hey guys,

I was just wondering a few things about how the tutorial registration works for you guys... are you able to pick your lecture times as well as your tutorials? At my school everything is done all at once, when u register for a course you pick the time of the lectures u want and the time of the tutorials u want, if the class even has one.. a lot do not!!
anyhow... and do i have to wait until february to do all this and are there usually a lot of times u can choose from?

anyhow, i was also wondering if there are any professors/lecturer's i shold stay clear of, or tutorial leaders/tutors??

hmmmm oh yah.. i was also wondering exactly how far penrith is from bankstown and if there is a shuttle bus that goes from campus to campus b/c i'm still thinking of enrolling in a dance class for when i'm there but i'm staying at bankstown and the dance classes are only at penrith!

also, i was wondering if any of the dance majors, who come on this site and have dance jobs in the city or what not know the process of trying to get a dancing job downtown or in and around the area?
I'm interested in getting permission to work while i'm in australia and would love to get a dance job at perhaps a casino or something for the weekends or whatever.. that'd be amazing..

anyhow.. any insight to the above questions would be amazing!!

Well, what happens is, each school that ur units belong to opens at a different time and day (in feb) and to ensure you have best selection it is best to register at the opening time though i think all of them are open till the first week of the session..

where there are lectures and tutorials scheduled u register for both... i know for my communications course generally there's no choice of lecture times but u must register for that lecture anyway and then u choose which tutorial u want...

well sometimes you actually dont know who the tutors are like and usually there is only 1 lecture unless u are willing to go to another campus so you either put up or change tutes in teh first week. also its first come first served, so if your late, the good times i.e. the times that allow you the smallest amount of time at uni or too early/late classes are all there is left.
you also need your student id and make a password before being able to register, just to note, so if you have your id, go to https://myuwsaccount.uws.edu.au/ and enter ur id and then accept soem terms etc and enter a password [any, but it needs a number and a characer in it] and then try as above.
nope, bankstown and penrith are quite far, its may be atound 1.50 hours by public trasnport unless you go by car whic may be quicker. ther is a shuttle bus from kingswood station [a station near penrith] whihc takes you to the campus and is free.
dance job? err...maybe i have a different view of what that means but ofcourse i wouldnt know anything about it...

It also depends on what course and subjects you do. For example, my course isn't popular - theres about 20 people doing it, and we are stuck with the times for lectures that they schedule for us. We can't change them And we can't select another time that suits our timetable better.

For the physchology stuff running at bankstown they typically hold two lectures per week for each subject , one in the morning(usually around 8-9am) and one in afternoon(around 3-5pm), you usually pick one of them, whichever fits your timetable best. As for tutorials they typically hold around 5 per week, you sign up online for the most convenient one. The ones directly before or after the lecture are usually taken up within about 20mins of registration opening, so don't get your hopes up.

As for jobs, I'm not sure specifically about dancing but there are a few websites you can check out

There are more but i cant think of them off the top of my head.

As for public transport - your best bet is catching the train although sydney's rail network has a repulation for being slow, unreliable and dirty. Check out the rail network map

The bankstown campus is actually closest to 'East Hills' station and even then it is about a 15min bus ride to/from the station to the campus.

For Bankstown to Penrith your best bet is driving, about 40mins depending on traffic. Just remember we drive on the left hand side of the road

thanks for all your help... angel, i went to that link about the draft time tables, however they do not show the the times that the classes will take place..all it says whether it is day or not is there somewhere else u need to go?? do u have to log in somewhere to access the platform properly b/c i already have myuwsaccount activated


hmm and to answer your question about dancing jobs i meant performing on stage for musicals or for a dance company at certain venues and stuff... it's just an option as it is my passion and i'd love to get paid for something i love to do haha not just that it'd be an amazing experience to be able to dance in a show in a different country..and continent!! haha

hmm about the transportation, i guess enrolling in a dance class might be too late now and the whole transportation thing might be too much as i will not have access to a car!!! i don't think i'll have the money to buy one for only 6months lol and the whole issue of driving on the left hand side haha.. perhaps someone can teach me.. although i'm sure its not that difficult, everything is just the opposite it may actually be fun lol

oh and isn't it possible to get a job on campus as an international student with a work visa??? i heard that some where.. i'm just curious

to be honest with u.. i probably won't even end up working but i'd like to know my options just in case i run out of cash.. i'm not really the type to run back to mommy and daddy and beg for cash lol... i mean despreate mesaures calls for desperate actions but i'd like that to only be my last resort!! hahaha i wanna try to do this on my own as much as possible

wow thats interesting..no roundabouts? lol...
btw, it seems that your units dont show the specific times [at all] but links ot teh unit descriptions [am i right?]. if thats the case, usually next year, close to tute rego time and the TT being finalised, you can check as its still in a provisional state. however i am not sure if its an error or just that they haven tdone it yet...hopefully an arts student can shd soem light here...

there is always many of those sales jobs going round, marketing/promotions as long as yu have a good photo and scrub up nicely than they usually take you in. although its not a danc ejob, it earns ok cash i think. or bar work, lots of clubs need more bar attendants or restaurants. usually suit international students as they readily accept. or "home trader" ~ ebay online seller, but stuff cheap and sell online for some profit.

thanks for all the job ideas.... that promotional work sounds pretty cool...and i'm a server at a restaurant here in canada so i can easily do that while i'm there
however i know that servers there get paid much more than minimum wage so that no tipping is necessary... here in canada we get paid LESS than minimum wage as tipping is customary and usually frowned upon if it is not done! normally u tip the taxes : 15% of the overall bill... i've served quite a few aussies and english people as well and they either pretend they don't know how to tip and give u like a dollar on a hundred dollar bill lol or tip u well

anyway... yes roundabouts we do not have them!! although i have driven around one in florida before, the states has a few of them... not very many as it is not that popular... oh and i lied... i drove around one at my uncles as the street to get into his has a mini round about.. lol it's very rare to see one here... they're quite confusing lol driving in the right seat and on the left side of the road might be quite trippy and fun.... lol who wants to lend me their car? hahaha

actually my friend who went travelling in australia for 5 months last year got a job as an ice cream truck driver hahaha... she told him that she had her international lisence but she really didn't... she was even like: "u want to see it" and he said no and that he believed her haha...
anyway you don't actually have to go through the whole process to get an aussie lisence.. u just have to get an international lisence.. some piece of paper sayin it's ok u can drive in the country i'm pretty sure it's quite simple!!!

the aussies had difficulty figuring out tipping because its really not done here, minimum wage is high enough that giving a tip is sort of like an insult because it suggests the tipper is 'above' the tippee.

as for the timetable...give it a few weeks, the humanities and psychology depts seem to be really slack at the moment, half of my timetable is even up yet.

ok well i finally was able to see the lecture times and tutorial times for the classes i've been enrolled in!!
i've come up with 2 more questions lol

what are staff members? are they the lecturers? or the tutorial leaders? or both

either way does anyone know anythinga bout Meg Smith, Renu Narchal, Mark Wiggins and Andrew Moore? are any of them good/bad.. any comments at all would be helpful... just want tos ee what i'm getting myself into.

Here in canada we have a website called: www.ratemyprof.ca and you get to view comments of students who've had certain professors, or what you call them: lecturers!!! There aren't many tutorials held here unless you're a sociology or social science major!!! there definately aren't any for psychology... unless you're in 4th year taking seminars! but that's different

usually we call our lecturers/tutors by name anyway, they dont like being formally addressed, i was also in trouble for calling my lecturer "sir" coz it was a habit i had since primary school..
we should have a site like that..but there isnt enough students here to rate most of them...

well many call us backwards..sometimes im inclined to agree, so in Canada its just a lecture and no tutorial [smaller class to ask questions/discuss/homework]?

well actually
u're not that backwards with regards to tutorials... we do have them here!! every university is different with regards to their procedures... for example mine has tutorials mainly for the social sciences and sociology classes u enroll in and u enroll it all at once.. at the beginning (like when u guys enroll for hte classes) nothing is done seperate!

i've never had a tutorial for psychology... although some university's do have tutorials for psych...

as for questions about papers and assignemnts or exams.. most professors don't mind if questions are brought up in class.. some definately DO.... but almost every large class (majority of lectures are large) there are 1 or 2 TA's (teaching assisstants) for the professor who actually does all the marking for the tests/exams/assignments!!! they hold office hours and u can ask them questions during that time, or through email... also lectures always have a break in the middle if it's 2 hours or more so u can ask the professor questions during that time also

oh man about calling the prof's and tutorial leaders by their name.. lol that's gonna be weird for me.. but i'll just not address them i'll just ask the question.... but hten again.. i have trouble speaking in class.. i get very shy and nervous about things like that booo
that's why i'm worried about these tutorials and how heavily they will count towards my overall grade...
normally here, if u do have a tutorial for your classes, you get graded on participation and contributions of answers/questions in class discussions and stuff! that's my weakness.... hopefully i'll be able to overcome that a little bit more when i'm there!! i can't handle presentations or speaking infront of large groups of people, i get so nervous and i stutter and sound like an absolute idiot!!!
i know as a business/marketing major u probably have to present a lot!!
My boyfriend is really good at it... he's a marketing graduate! lol

in humanities subjects anyways attendance at tutorials counts to about 10% of the final mark - the check the roll, but not at lectures. As for talking in class you usually have to be "Principal Discussant" one week in your tutorials. That is you have to do a 5-10 minute talk to the class on the subject for that week - you usually have to do this in each subject and its about 15-20% of your final mark.

Well, in my course we are marked on participation during lectures and tutorials (only because our classes are small), also, even though the rolls are not marked in lectures, lecturers will take note of who attends and who doesn't. And yes, lecturers will take the time to remember your name (well, from my experience they do) its like they have photographic memory

Lecturers and tutors will always answer your questions, either face to face or by email or phone, so never be afraid to ask what you may think may be a dumb question.

yes, thanks for the info...i was actually asking IF you had tutes in Canada not how they work but nevertheless it was an informing read soo we arent backward after all...

we can ask q's in lectueres but after calss or if the lecturer lets us do so, sually lectureres are really nice but some are meanies. usually you will see the end of lecture scramble where there will be 2 parties, thos ewho run from the scene like they saw an axe murderer and those who will pelter the lecturer with questions about their enrolment or their opoinion abotu what has just been said in the lecture. [with soem exxageration in some parts]

lol @ those people who run away looking like they have seen an axe murder, thats so funny! But I must admit that I am one of those people, well, it depends on the class though, usually I just stay behind 5 - 10 minutes, can't be bothered fighting my way through a small door with a hurd of elephants.
