If you're doing crappy at maths, you can do better by doing TONS of practise. Practise ensures you understand how concepts in maths work. There is no other way to get better marks. It's time consuming but if you want to do well then do it. The best way is to do extra exercises and past HSC papers (or at least the questions that are relevant to whatever you're learning).

i agree with both of them
anything without worked solutions i consider useless. there is no point doing any questions without worked solutions, as there's too much stress if you get it wrong.
if you have probs with one type of question, keep doing those over and over, as eventually you will get it. and when you get it you are sure to feel an achievement

I for one am so very happy that we got Calculus. In the everyday context it's maths for the sake of knowledge, which is a nice thing to have.
Past papers are the only way to go. In fact, you can buy some past papers books in the Buy+Sell forum cheap, and they should have worked solutions. These books, when used, will be the best practice you could ever do.

Grab yourself the HSC Success Past Papers for Mathematics
When you get homework, do all the exercises and try to understand the concept, then once thats done refer to the past paper books which references each page for each topic you do, so say you learnt quadratic polynomials today, do all the exercise for hw and do a bit of the questions in past papers, consistency in past papers will get things stuck in your head, because your school only grabs ques from past papers and sticks it in with slight modifications, besides the trial which is brought externally, other than that you dont need those 50 HSC tips or wateva ur just gonna overload ur brain with a shit load of textbooks which turns u off from the subjects gets u scared like hell, just your school text book and past papers book, and also a little notepad that you should be consistently writing your formulas or little nifty tips and tricks into, these 3 essential item is all u need for success in maths.

Enjoy and understand maths......thats the easiest way to do well in it..and when you do past papers, do them under exam conditions and then when you finish go through and mark them and try and find any weaknesses and improve on them....these couple of tips Worked for me.
It depends... if you can do it on your own then by all means, work ahead. But if you do, follow the textbook order because some stuff is required as prior knowledge for other topics (e.g. calculus -> integration). If you have tutoring then you're usually a bit ahead anyway.

i wouldn't really suggest to go ahead by urself..cos in 2u maths and beyond, its hard to understand topic by yourself, even if you do understand it, u might miss tips and tricks your teacher give while ur doing something else..
the only "moving ahead" plan u should be doing is doing an exercise or two ahead of the class...of course, if you know that your class is really behind compare to many schools, then at that point you should start doing ahead

i wouldn't go ahead either. as '...' said you may miss tips and tricks, and as well as that you will spend more time teaching yourself, and waste the class time (and you have to be in class). it will take a lot of unnecessary time out of your schedule. i think it's better to use that time on getting better at what you have learnt rather than moving ahead.

i usually teach myself at home in the holidays buying a few textbooks, usually helps when your pathetic at that subject and coaching wont do,

yeap, thats a very smart idea..it might sound nerdy and stuff..but eh..i actually start loving maths like 2months b4 the hsc exams and that actually made me work and my marks kinda sky-rocketed..
well..i didn't get a really top mark, but the improvment was there
yeap..maths is the only subject u cannot cram (cept formulas,but thats pretty useless)

If you practice the phoenix book and do every question there and understand it fully, you'd at LEAST get a band 5.
I hated maths. First assessment I got 4/32.
After practising the book a little bit second assessment mark sky-rocketed by double. I got 8/30!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
