Haven't had a poll for a while. Speaking of which, would you like a new flag to go up one? Yay or Nay, the options are wide open.

http://www.ausflag.com.au/home.html

This dusty site has some alternatives as well as reasons to cross over. I personally like the Qantas one.

A lot of the new designs try to incorporate Jack in some way.

That's a great one. Who doesn't like the Qantas logo? Good excuse to re-nationalize it too

The Cross mucks up the symmetry I think. Jack and Maple have symmetry and are therefore cool.

Those flags lack the Federation star thingy.

Should have at least the Federation star and the Southern Cross.
Yep. The obvious thing to do is just add the Aboriginal flag in the corner, but it doesn't work somehow.

Perhaps the flag should be the aboriginal flag but a globe in the middle instead of the sun ala brazil.

Keating proposed one with the U.N logo, which looked stupid, but some global expression would be good.

forgoing history for something which is aesthetically pleasing would be such an insult to our culture.

That's a great point. Ideas like that are already incorporated in buildings like Parliament - the void under the flag, the imprisoning walls etc

Personally, I think the UK flag is the best flag in the world and the Australian flag is a good adaptation of this, because of the Australian flag's good appearance there is support for it even amongst many strong republicans. Most world flags in my opinion are pretty unimaginative, usually just a few different coloured stripes maybe with some stars in the corner  What these Ausflag people seem to want to do is remove all symbols of Britishness from the Australian flag. In my opinion past influence from other countries is important and should be reflected on flags. You can see for example that many European countries have similar flags to onr another.

Canada changed its flag mainly due to the Quebec/French issue. The old flag was much better in my opinion although many of the provinces still retain the red ensign style flags.

It's a British flag, not an Australian flag. A lot of the designs throw in the red white and blue, for old times sake anyway.
Maybe just a big Kangaroo saying "Don't run over me"

Yes, but most of the articles on that site that I read seemed to be saying we should include aboriginal symbolism on a new flag, and a similar argument could be put up against that.

I believe that it should be a flag for the whole of Australia, if it is to be changed, and to claim that Aboriginal culture is more relevent than British culture is similar to saying that British culture is more relevant than that of groups that immigrated post-colonisation.

How much culture can be reflected in a flag? A maple leaf did a smashing job for Canada. But I think this goes to absolution*s point about balance. Recognition in the national flag is the very least we can do for Indigenious Australia, who have unfairly suffered very much

i think australians might find it hard to adopt a new flag, a simple/good solution i think would be to adopt the Aboriginal flag as having equal status as the current flag. i.e. a "second" official flag, flown atop govt buildings etc (which is already done in many places)

edit
tho this one is a pretty sexy flag
