The ABC is meant to be an independent public broadcaster, not some 'Australia 1' service operating from the Lodge.

The ABC have many ways in which they try and stop being biased. In the lead up to federal elections, they hire impartial people to check that their coverage is as unbiased as possible. Media Watch is a great show...

What about the ABA though? I'm so glad Flint resigned, especially after those ass-kissing letters he sent to Alan Jones, not to mention his strong liberal party ties. The head of the ABA is supposed to be impartial and he was totally biased!

I'm basing my comments more on ABC Radio, rather than TV, having not watched much ABC TV.

But I do listen to AM every morning, and there's no doubt that the interviews are markedly different. Basically, when the interviewer is interviewing a Liberal party figure, they ask attacking questions. When it's a Labor party figure, they ask questions which allow the figure to explain the policy.

For example, about the 'fat kids' problem
ABC: Why take the drastic step of banning food advertising, and not just having more education programs or encouraging exercise.
Labor: Well, we're doing all three. It's an integrated response.

I love Media Watch. Nice to see that David Marr is still "on leave" from the SMH for 3 years now.

From my experience the ABC has a tendancy to be anti-Government, not anti-Liberal. The previous Labor governments were always complaining that the ABC was anti-Labor.

I watch a lot of ABC, but do try to get news from other sources (though thinking about it a lot of them would be considered left leaning - ABC TV, radio and website, SMH, crikey.com.au, Sky News, BBC World and The Economist)

What you need is more of The Daily Telegraph and Bulletin!

I don't think you can accuse media of being anti-govt or taking sides... it depends who is screwing up at the time!!! And usually the government's screw ups are fairly wide reaching and important. Also, the policies of the government in power are the ones that need to be most carefully scrutanized and analyzed because they are the policies most likely to actually be implemented.

But as others have said, in many ways it is the reader's responsibility to see bias and think critically about news are current affairs. If you believe, say The Daily Telegraph, to be the news gospel and you don't read news from elsewhere, your insight and views will be skewed by their bias. That is why you should turn to different media outlets to get different views on things. That's also why we have media ownership laws, to allow more diverse perspectives in the media.
