The actual question is:

If the parabolas y = x2 and 2y = (x - a)2 intersect at the points P and Q where P is at x = x1; Q at x = x2, show that the abscissa of these points is given by the equation x2 + 2ax - a2 = 0.

yea that question is like from the 70's.

I have a sheet too from the 70's of locus that uses those 2 words.
That my teacher gave to me cause she said are the best.

You wont get it in the hsc these days.
well they would do this "meets the Abscissa (x-axis) and the ordinate (y-axis)"

Dont worry, the maths hsc is there to test your math knowledge not your vocab. They wouldn't try and dissadvantage people like that.

Try solving them simutaneously cos they r bascially asking the solution to x, which they call '' abcissa''.
