This is really embarrassing, but I've completely forgotten how to solve absolute value questions. (yes, trials are soon. no, I don't know how to tell my brain to stop forgetting stuff)

Call me crazy... but don't you have to plug up a hole before you try filling something up? : P
The implication was to look at things positively rather than negatively. It was supposed to be a glass half full / half empty analogy.

The best way to remember something is
(1) Have an interest in the topic beyond marks alone
(2) Understand how something works rather than just memorising formulae or methods
(3) Use the material to answer questions of your own devising (questions that arise due to your own natural inquisitiveness)

I see your situation as similar to trying to learn Chinese from a textbook, then wondering why it doesn't come back years later after never having visited China.
