Im not too clear on why AC was chosen to transmit electricity trough power lines instead of DC.

I know that AC alternates back and forth 50 times a sec but wont that alternation cause greater power loss than if it just travel direct (DC) ??

Any one know why ?

dc current can't be transformed from various voltage to current ratios because the current doesn't oscilate, which is the principal of induction that transformers are based on. thus everyone would have one set ratio for everything and energy loss wouild be enourmous! ac is also cheaper to produce
