  1. What is the property(s) of these gases that cause it to form acid rain?
  2. What are the source(s) of these gases in the atmosphere that cause rain to be acidic?

I've got some questions regarding acid rain.

1. They are water soluble so dissolve in rain when it falls.
2. SO2: decomposition of organic matter, volcanic eruptions, smoke from fires, burning fossil fuels, extraction of metals from compounds of sulfur.
NOx: combustion of fossil fuels particularly in motor vehicles, lightning.

^ Simple, fast, efficient and to the point.

You may also want to note that CO2 is another huge contributor to creating acid rain - it is infact the main causer of acid rain which occurs naturally... although this is the weakest form of acidic rain and you shouldn't worry about using it as an example regarding these questions; it was a multiple choice question once, though.

^ that's a good point, CO2 dissolves in water so naturally, all rain that falls has a slight acidity to it due to H2CO3 presence, so you'd expect pH of around 3-5 and I have seen this in exams
