Actuarial studies as a career path (1 Viewer)

Hi, I am currently in year 12. I am planning to do Actuary but not sure that's what i want to do after AI being taken over as I have zero coding and business skills. I am currently doing Eng Adv, Math Adv, Math Ext 1, Phy, Chem, Bio and Sci Extension1 . My marks in English Adv and ex2 are not looking great but i enjoy both I get 50-60 percent in ext 2 and 65 per in end adv. My predicted ATAR is 90 and I am eligible to apply to UNSW coop Gateway and Gateway admission program which requires 90. I think, I can get 92 Atar. First, I had medicine as my dream career and after little research, I found I have to sacrifice my health to a large extent. So, I looked up for a job thats related to STEM, high pay, Good Work-life Balance and Job oppurunity. This one was interesting and ticked the boxes. So, How hard was the Interview and personal statement? Is there any tips you can give to me? Which double degrees are best? One of the reasons, I have low English marks its because English is my second language. Can you suggest some careers that ticks most or all? I don't mind studing for 10 years after graduation but in long term the job I pick should give me the minimum needed mental and physical health. That's the major reason I dropped the plan of career in medicine through a medical pathway. I have registered for UCAT just incase if I change my mind. Right now only 2 careers I have in my mind which are Actuary and Medicine. Also, I dont pure Mathematics like pages and pages of inequality proofs. I would be really happy with any information you give to me about anything like careers, or how to improve my marks. Thank you in Advance for your time and insights.

In terms of actually being able to work in traditional actuarial fields (GI or Life Insurance), the chances of that is much lower, but honestly most actuaries end up not completing their Part 2's or Part 3's and work in finance, data science or any field related to their second degree (CS being very common). There's just too many actuarial graduates than the number of jobs available here in Sydney.

I don't know much about the gateway admission into UNSW but many people end up going into actuarial with some really high marks (99+). From most of the people I know, you need to be very strong in maths or be willing to put a lot of effort into stats, financial maths and also general intuition as well. Doing ext 1 is great but I'd be cautious if you aren't performing at a very high level (Min Band 6 honestly). Having done 1 full year at UNSW I can say that a decent amount of the maths is calculations, but some proofs and general intuition are required. Also I'd probably look at Macquarie Uni if it's a suitable option as they offer actuarial as well.
