Actuarial Studies + Law...worth it? (1 Viewer)

i did get UAI 99.00 and i find that actuarial studies seems interesting, but i do want to keep my options open.

is doing actuarial studies + law at maq worth all the workload and effort?

is it possible to 'drop' actuarial studies and just pursue law?

would you suggest any other combined degree or something else?

any helpful suggestions welcome!

People usually drop one of their courses, there's a big thread on this somewhere where it was unanimous that it is not worth it and no-one will complete the course. lol

Yeah it's not. Sooner or later you'll have to pick between the two. It's a waste for the reasons mentioned above. Not speaking so practically though, if you want to do it purely out of interest then go for it.

I'd say you should do it for a semester. I dropped law after my first semester and kept actuary instead. See how you find the workload, the 2 degrees are valuable but you'll need to work damn hard.

Actuarial and Law don't complement each other, don't do it.

actuarial/law is a killer combination...people have completed it, and yeh i think they'd probably move into IB...If you can complete it, its quite impressive...

The good thing is, you can drop your actuarial major and just do com/llb or app fin/llb...but with your uai you might have snuck into syd/nsw law (perhaps after 1 year)...so you gotta really make your mind up whether you want the actuarial...

Apply for late-round UNSW BCom/LLB.

Otherwise, transfer from BCom (Actuarial Studies) to BCom/LLB

mmmmm interesting...either BCom(major actuarial studies)/LLB at UNSW or at Macquarie...what to choose?

the thing is, the 2004 cut off at UNSW for combined laws is 99.15, just above my UAI, so there may not be any choice...but then theres also as §eraphim said, to transfer to UNSW after a year...

perhaps people would like to suggest other combined degrees with either actuarial studies or law at maq or elsewhere?

Perhaps Actuarial/Maths @ UNSW?

You know, you don't have to do a high UAI cut-off course just because you got 99.

I'm not saying it isn't. Just a more suitable choice especially for 99.00, don't you think?

Well, it's hard to judge based on UAI alone. Depends on your interests and ability I guess. But if you do well at Actuarial Studies and Law, it's a very good way to enter M&A in IB.

yes its a very good way to enter...but he could do ordinary Com/Law and get into IB too...

I'd say put BCom/LLB at UNSW as your first preference (and when you there, choose hte major in Actuarial)...If you dont like actuarial you can just drop the major...The thing is, are you really suited to Law/have an interest in it? Don't just do law because you have the uai...

then I'm thinking put actuarial/law at mq...then actuarial/something else...

It really depends if your genuinely serious about Law...

therefore, nothing like CPA/CA

as an actuary you will be going for FIAA status anyway...

thank you peoples! i think i have a clearer understanding of what to do know.

however, i dont know if i do like to do law...i must say, i do 'well' at pretty much anything...its just that i dont know which career path to take, and i can honestly say i dont really have a more 'liking' towards a certain combined degree.

i am boiling in the pot of confusion, and stewing sour as well.

that's bullshit... it complements it very well.. 4th yr guy i talked to (workin part time at mq bank) said IB places love ppl studying combined law coz they can express themselves very well, are very logical and know how to do their research
