To me something that smacks of idiocy in regards to our current award system is the pay scales eg adult rate is not paid to an employee until the turn 21.

When legally judged an adult in every other possible way at 18 - eg can vote, drink, drive, move out of home, smoke and be tried and convicted as an adult. We are paid 70% of adult rate.

This system of only deeming someone an adult at 21 reeks of a bygone era - I see no reason why all 18 year olds cant be paid at the full adult rate.

From an economics standpoint the cost to an employee be they 18,19,20 or 21 of providing their labour is the same and the flip side is that I can not imagine an employer is getting more work out of a 21y/o than an 18y/o.

Thus this system would seem to make neither common nor economic sense and be grossly unfair.

On the flip side it makes it easier for under <21's to get unskilled work.

The pay rate in aus uses the same system in the U.S. Only the voting age is lowered to 18. Do you know why people celebrate on their 21st?

what do you mean, either by the comment that it replicates the u.s. system, or the implication of a lowered voting age?
