If you get over 75 in standard you will be scaled the same as advanced. Eg. 2 students do the exact same subjects and get the exact same score except in english.
One kid does standard the other does advanced.
The standard person gets 87.
The advanced kid gets 80.

The ATAR of the standard kid's will be higher because they got over 75 and after 75 they are scaled the same. ;)

So the difference is that STD english has capped scaling.
The HIGHEST mark was 94, you cant scale a 94 to 100, if someone in standard later on in the years got a 99-100 then yes his HSC mark would scale to 100. Standard is not capped.

E.g. Biology is a non-capped subject however in 2009 the highest mark was 98% and it was scaled to a 99.8, in 2008 the highest mark was 99% this increase in 1% allowed the mark to be scaled to a 100.

English Standard: HSC 47.0 SCALED 44.5
English Advanced: HSC 49.5 SCALED 50

A subject that is capped is a subject that does not have the MAXimum of 50 after scaling.
Oh God....

2008 Biology: 99-->100
2009 Biology: 98-->99.8

The scaling for the subject is the same however they aren't going to unfairly award a student who scored 1 less % than last years max 100 scaled mark.

Yet even though the max wasn't 100 in 2009 for Biology, BIOLOGY IS A NON-CAPPED SUBJECT.

Oh dear God...

So does this mean there is no such thing is a capped subject? Because I have high hopes for industrial technology.
There are capped subjects, and yes sadly IT is one of them.
2009: 50-->40.4

Which means the student who got 100 got 100 reported on his HSC report, but when calculating his atar the aggregate score contributing for 1unit X2 was 40.4 Edit:(i.e. a 80.8 contributing if it was in his best 10 units)

Ok, I don't get it. How can I tell if a subject is capped?
Just look at the subject and see whether its wearing a cap or not. It's not that hard.
