From what I understand there is actually quite an important distinction between Standard and Advanced - my English teacher informs me that it is very hard, nearly impossible to get a band 6 in Standard English.

You are misinformed. It is certainly possible to get a band 6 in English (Standard), it's just that the strength of the candidature is not high enough to achieve it. There would be more of the less talented students at English taking English (Standard) which means very few people get high marks because they are simply typically less talented than the students of English (Advanced). The performance descriptors for a band 6 in English (Standard) are exactly the same as the performance descriptors for a band 6 in English (Advanced). Thus, getting a band 6 in English (Standard) should be equally as difficult as getting a band 6 in English (Advanced). Since the quality of the students is generally higher in English (Advanced) than in English (Standard), this explains why there is a lower number of band 6 results in English (Standard) than in English (Advanced), based on the same performance descriptors.

Also some courses at uni have Advanced English as a prerequisite ... thats why I did Advanced.

That is not true. Practically NONE of the university courses (in any NSW university) require a specialised English course as a prerequisite. There are only a small handful of course that have English (Advanced) as ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE. Note the difference between prerequisite and assumed knowledge.
Prerequisite means it is pretty much mandatory for a student to take that course in order to gain entrance. Very few courses have particular HSC courses as prerequisites.
Assumed knowledge means that the students taking that course are assumed to have some extent of knowledge of a particular HSC course. Students can still gain entry into the course if they have not completed a HSC course that is deemed as assumed knowledge in that particular university course.

I go to a selective school where Standard is not offered. Everyone has to do Advanced English- that rule has made a lot of people with Maths/Science brains angry. So my point is that I can't make comment, as I have no experience whatsoever of the Standard course.
So why did I bother commenting? Well, I've got to start somewhere.

Im also in yr 11 this yr, we had to takeonly the top 18 students from our yr 10 coz too many of us wanted to do advanced in the end we now only hav bout 15 of us. We are just ur ordinary bad mouthed public school but there are some really good students in our class. only 4 of them do extension tho. I would rather be challenged by advanced and be annoyed that i havent started my assignment than sit in a classroom reading texts with people who can barely read words that are longer than 6 letters and think its difficult to find one text on changing perspective.

Some school's only allow advanced english because they believe that their students have developed english skills that makes them capable of doing advanced . And if you loved english and you were really good at it, wouldn't you rather do a more challenging course? also some people might do advanced just so they can do ext1+2

advanced english isn't that bad, however the main assignment is absolutely horrible. And standard does that as well, so i guess it doesnt matter which one you do. Extension english is better, but you have to do advanced to do that

There really isnt that much difference in STANDARD and ADV. ENGLISH...

Im doing Standard English... and i helped sum person who does 3 or 4 Units of English on this site with his Essay and Speech!! Well guess what?... I cant really say HELP... because i DID write his essay and i did write half of his speech... OH and u know what else?... *he* got FULL marks in both things.

Essay = 20/20
Speech= 10/10

FULL MARKS FOR ME!!! LOL !!! And ur hearing it all from a STANDARD ENGLISH student helping an ADVANCED STUDENT who *mind u* goes to a SELECTIVE SCHOOL *lol* ... soo yee... oh and if ur wondering WHY i didnt go into ADV. ENG... its because it was only UNTIL Half way into year11.. i only STARTED liking ENG... but before...hahaha... English was juz nothing to me and it was mainly about Maths and Chem! LOL!

i was the opposite, i failed english in yr 10 and chose advanced english in year 11 with the option of 'if i dont like it move down' and loved it, i got my first ever principals award on my essays and i did better than expected, then in yr 12 i got a new teacher and im so stuffed cause she just talks all lesson about god knows what and i only just found out wat my assignment, due in a week, is about (thank god for this site).

Why is it so hard to get a band 6 in standard but relatively easy for those in advance? Advance is suppose to be harder than standard, but each year I see more students getting a band 6 in advance than in standard. I'm currently a year 11 student doing standard at Sefton and I'm very worried about those statistics. Is it because the markers are tough or is it because most students are just plain stupid? Please explain!

Proberly the stupid part, they dont have interest in it so they ignore it and focus on their other topics. Dumb theory but they try to make it work with there uai's lol OR they dont need a uai and are just using yr 12 to gain knowledge on their other topics.

Im in yr11 this year, i was in standard english but i changed to advanced after one lesson becuse of the people i got band 4s on everything last year and the work is really easy now, im just not motivated enough to do the work.

adv eng people have better work ethics than standard and people have more expectations of you which can help motivate you to work harder. (i got band 4 in eng but i decided to go into top eng adv class, and i'm going well)

Its also at Fort Street High, but i guess other selective schools do that as well.. I didnt get a choice to choice whether i wanted to do adv or not..

Hey i just became a yr 12 this year, term 4, and i need advice on which to choose. I read the ENTIRE thread and i have a slight concept of which to choose but i have no idea if i'm doing the right thing. I DON'T enjoy English at all. In yr 11 i wasn't even trying, more like bludging, and just passed and i'm improving too. But i don't know if i should go down to Standard or stay in Adv English? My rank is like 28th out of 35 people in my class ! And judging that UAI is based on rank ... i don't think i should stay in ADV should I? I suppose it is better for me to come in the top 30% in Standard rather than come bottom 30% of Adv right? LOL i need serious help!!! And what's this about being impossible to get a band 6 in Standard...it isn't true right?

You can get a band 6 in standard english, it is just rarely done, only 5 people received a band 6 in standard english last year.

Secondly, for a person who is averaging 73% in trial exams, dreads going to English classes, is ranked 38th out of 180 in the year, but receieves a B in English report and enjoys reading from time to time, which would be the best choice?

Just wanted to get some advice from you guys as well, as I've already asked the 2006 Year 10 group.

I was faced with that same decision at the beginning of the year, I didn't enjoy going to enlgish and my SC mark (for english) was 78%

I was in advanced for 4 weeks, I then dropped to Standard because advanced was a lot more demanding than standard and I would rather put that extra effort into other subjects.

IMO Advanced is for the people who enjoy English, not the people who couldn't really care less about it. The texts in advanced are harder than standard and you go into more detail.

Another thing to take into accound is competition, in advanced people were battling for high marks/rankings, in standard half of them couldn't really care less. Halfway through this year I was ranked 7/116 with a mark of 77% which shows that it's not hard to do well in standard.

Also for the people saying that advanced students have an advantage over standard students in the common sections, I disagree with this. For my yearly prelim exam I got 14/20 for the stan/adv common section, beating more than half of my former advanced class.

I think that Standard is the right choice for you
