hi people, i've been getting mixed reviews from my friends about whether i should drop or not.

Some context...
Throughout yr 11 in english advanced i've been barely passing 11/20.
My best section seems to be creative with a 16/20, however the same story ditched my in prelims due to me not being able to adapt to the stimulus, and cuz i apparently talked abt death and i shouldn't.
My best section in prelims was Short Answer which i didn't study for at all and got a 13/20. I failed both my essays. overall i failed prelims by one mark, ten marks below the average.

Now the advice i've gotten so far is
1. Don't drop, because doing shit in Adv doesn't mean you'll do well in Std. They both require the same effort so you'd rather be in advanced and do shit (cuz of scaling & alignment) , than in std.
2. Drop to std, there is less competition and it's better than advanced content wise (not sure what they meant by this)

now my opinion is stay in advanced because in the class is very engaged in the learning, majority of people in std don't "care" about the subject and thus the class isn't as learning based. And i know for a fact that if my class is like that i'm not gonna put the effort to study.

I'd like some on advice on what you guys think would be better for me to do, my end goal is to get a 93 atar hopefully.

thank you :3

I'd say stay in adv, simply because the scaling just isn't worth it for std. Additionally, you seem to enjoy being in adv then std in class which i think would be a major fact to whether you will do well in the HSC. However, you might have to consider which texts you are studying in yr 12 and whether you will enjoy it or not (although in my very skewed opinion, none of the std texts seem good).

im always against dropping. Basically bc of what you said.

Last year:
- 181 people, out of 32994 (0.55%), got a band 6 in english standard. (click to see source)
- 3835 people out of 25398 (15.1%), got a band 6 in english advanced. (click to see source)

Obviously there’s a difference in the effort and calibre of the cohorts, but the skills and depth of analysis expected are fundamentally the same

I think stay cause

a. knowing ur teacher she's good and she can help u improve. If u drop to std u will def have a downgrade in ur teacher.

b. Std and adv are basically the same in terms of analysis and writing and it's not like it's easier. Cause I'm pretty sure u still have to write a decent level to do well.

c. Scaling and obv ur cohort as u said.

Also u have time to improve. At the beginning of this year I was also considering dropping cause I was barely passing but then I locked in, kept on handing in practice responses and I improved so if u do the same u will def improve

And also some people in my class who are failing are still saying. Maybe ask ur teacher but even then take that with a grain of salt cause sometimes teachers tell u to drop for no reason. Also if u don't think ur gonna rank top 3 in std then there's no point. Also the talking about death in ur craft piece is stupid cause my teacher last year said that the only topics we can't talk about is abortion and suicide. Like how do they know whether or not u actually went through grief or not so they should let u write about it

i told all of my friends (who ignored me and thought i was sabotaging them and now are ignoring my advice) that if the reason you're dropping to standard is bc you can't analyse then you're not going to survive in standard, bc they both require the same number of analysis
however if the reason you're dropping is because you do not know how to phrase your analysis then staying in advanced is not good for you, as standard requires less sophistication in writing,

ultimately, standard is for people who:
1. are not passionate/care about english
2. are not able to understand english
3. they are more mathematical based

this is what i told everyone in my class that was thinking of dropping but as i said they all thought i was lying and pulling shit from my ass, they even laughed in my face when i told them 'personally i think standard is harder than advanced in terms of marks and doing well', safe to say all of those losers are still struggling with standard so i want to see who will be laughing at whom on that hsc release date, fucking losers
[sorry little rant]

yeah lowkey doing bad in adv doesn't look as bad as doing mediocre/bad in std
