Hey everyone.

Here's my problem:

I don't exactly have an idea to work with for EE2. I've decided on a short story or series of short stories linked by a common theme. But my actual idea, which is secret since it's not thought-out yet, seems really too simplistic to use... particularly when compared with everything everyone else has posted. Nor do I have any idea of how I'll link my tentative ideas to Advanced or Extension 1.

I also haven't done any proper work on the thing itself (proposal, work, journal - nothing) but since it's a class of one the assessment task part is not a big deal. And since I only just got cleared to take the subject on the very last day of Term Four last year, I haven't had any proper classes.

I'm not too worried about the actual writing part; it's the idea thing that's killing me. So I kind of see it as three choices:
- Go ahead with a simple idea, write it well and hope it rings true
- Sell out for the marks and do something complex that I'm not interested in
- Throw in the towel and disappoint myself and my teachers

Any advice would be seriously helpful. Thanks in advance.

Haha we're never going to know how simple it is unless you tell us.
Love? Peace? The colour blue?

And the way you've written it, options 2 and 3 really aren't viable. Forget all the complex postmodern crap and just write the simple one. My story has a fairly simple plot, it's pretty linear, first person POV, nothing postmodern or heavily layered in there (yet). If your writing's good that should be enough.

Edit: I thought it had to be tied to Adv OR EE1 not necessarily both? If so, nearly everything can be clubbed into some kind of semblance of a Belonging story. Beat them over the head with it. My last belonging creative story was marked down for being 'too subtle' because I only used the actual word 'belonging' once.

do the simplistic idea, but the idea, while simple now, will probably become more complex as you start doing proper research into the subject.

even Love can be complex. is that the kind of love between a man and a woman or love for a cuban cigar (Dr. Hibbert). Is it love between partners or between a human and thier pet? Will you explore what causes love or what people do because of love.

your simple idea will definately become more complex as you start researching it and start talking with your teacher, but go with it for now

Seems to me that Post modern stuff is definately the ticket but not the only one. It should be something from the left of social politics. Even a linear narrative is fine if it is about the disinfranchised, the lost, the marginalised. Alternatively some sort of critique about modern society and its alienating effect. Starting with anything is a good idea cause the most important thing is to write - I hope you are putting all of your struggles in your journal - but keep thinking about what it is you are trying to say!!!!

I wouldn't worry to much about simplicity - just make sure its not so simple as to be cliched or base. Remember, you can use your justification(s) is the reflection statement to help you to this end. Make sure the expression is superb.

As said above, the markers seem (god knows why) to love postmodern crap, so this might be a direction to consider.

Postmodernism, Socialism and Feminism seem to be the keys to EE2 success.

A utopia where everyone breaks the fourth wall and penises are no longer the opiate of the people imo.

Hahaha. Thanks so much everyone, I pitched my idea to my teacher today and she's fallen in love with it - and apparently it's not so simple after all (proving my point that I'm turning into a stressed and insecure HSC monkey but that's another story) - so I'm good to go. Just gotta research and write now!

Incidentally and in response to dizzyizzy, yes, it only has to tie into Extension or Advanced. Mine is going to (like pretty much everyone else in the state) tie into Belonging... because Crime Fiction is a bit too limited, as well as having nothing to do with my idea.

About markers loving post-modernism... I've heard that they don't because too many people have butchered it? Doesn't matter, I'm not up to that stage anyway :)

A false statement. There is nothing to butcher.

postmodernism only gets marks if its done WELL. the thing is, a lot of really good stories will have something to do with postmodernist themes.

and in previous years, postmodernism was a very popular tie-in since it was done in 3U eng.

postmodernisms great, but dont do it unless you can pull it off REALLY well. i'm sticking to modernism and stream of consciousness for mine :)
