They don't seem to do that much with Alias actually. Most Alias eps I've got have TV station watermarks. It's Angel and 24 that get the satellite hacking treatment :p

What happens in America, is a few days before an episode is aired, it needs to be sent to all the different TV stations around the country. The networks use satellite to do this. This is called a wildfeed. It's actually pretty simple to get the eps from this, because they are not encrypted. There are lists on the internet that give details about which satellite sends which program and at what time. It's just expensive because you need a big satellite dish to receive it (ie at least 6 feet). You can usually find wildfeed leaked onto the internet about 24 hours before the air date, but it varies depending on the program.
