Here are some FAQs about preferences and offers etc.

Q. What is the deadline for changing my preferences for each round?

A.
Mid August 2005 - Thurs 5 January 2006 Main Round
Wed 18 January - Mon 23 January 2006 Late Round
Wed 1 February - Thurs 2 February 2006 Final Round

Q. What if my UAI is better or worse than expected?

A. Check last year's cut-offs for the courses in which you are interested. These are shown in the UAC 2006 Guide starting page 65. Use last year's cut-offs as an aide when considering your preferences(though never let it dictate your choices). Remember that cut-offs indicate the lowest UAI accepted for entry into the course - they do not represent the average ability of students accepted into the course.

As well as shuffling the order of your preferences, you can add or delete courses. You can have up to nine preferences including any combination of courses.

Some courses have closing dates earlier than UAC closing dates. Check table 1 and part 2 of your UAC 2006 Guide before adding any new courses to determine whether they have an early closing date or additional requirements such as questionnaires, interviews, portfolios or tests.

If you fear your UAI may be too low to allow entry into the course of your choice, then there are alternative methods of entry to university. These methods are further detailed here.

Q. Does the order of my preferences matter?

A. Yes, put your preferences in the order in which you want them to be considered. Put the course you would most like to do first, then the course you would next prefer to do, and so on. This is because during the selection process in January, your preferences are considered one at a time in the order in which you have listed on your application.

If you are not selected for your first Commonwealth-supported(CSP) preference you will be consideredd equally with all other eligile candidates for your second CSP preference and so on. Similarly, if you are not selected for your first domestic fee-paying(DFEE) preference you will be considered equally with all other eligible applicants for your second preference and so on.

This means that if you have both CSP and DFEE preferences you may recieve two offers in the Main Round - one to your highest CSP preference and one to your highest DFEE preference.

Q. When are offers released?

A.
Fri 28 October 2005 Distance Education offers e-released
Fri 2 December 2005 Early Round offers e-released
Wed 4 January 2006 Preliminary Round offers e-released
Wed 18 January 2006 Main Round offers e-released at 9pm
Wed 1 February 2006 Late Round offers e-released at 9pm
Wed 8 February 2006 Final Round offers e-released

Q. How do I accept my offer?

A. Follow the instructions enclosed inside the envelope with your offer letter. You must accept your offer by the date specified in the instructions otherwise you may lose your offer.

Q. What if I don't recieve a Main Round offer?

A. You will automatically be considered for all of your preferences again in the Late and Final Rounds, providing the courses you have as preferences still have vacancies. You can change your preferences for consideration for the later rounds until the closing dates previously shown.

Q. If I recieve a Main Round offer, can I accept it and also change my preferences for consideration in the Late and Final Rounds?

A. Yes, UAC advises you to accept your Main Round offer. You can then also submit a change of preferences for the Late and Final Rounds. You do not jeopardise your chances of recieving another offer by accepting your Main Round offer.

If you recieve an offer in one round and accept it, and then recieve an offer in a later round, you can choose either to:

*keep your previous offer and not accept the new offer or;

*withdraw from your previous offer and accept your new offer.

Do not assume you will recieve an offer in the Late or Final Rounds - it will depend on whether there are enough vacancies in the course(s). Also, cut-offs may vary between rounds and could be less than or greater than or the same as those from the Main Round

Does anyone know how long you have to accept your offer?

What if you get offered stuff from two different universities? Say, can I get an offer from USyd and UNSW, and then choose? Also, what if I get an offer from unis in different states, ie. UNSW and UniMelb? Can I accept both and then choose?

So if you get the offer on the 18th, how long does it take to accept? Can you do it online and have it all sorted on the same day?

I'm just a bit confused about what to do because on 20th Jan, I'm going to live in Germany for a year. Obviously I'll need to accept my offer and quickly defer. Would I have enough time? If not, can it all be done online when I'm over there? And if not, would I have to authorise someone to act on my behalf?

I think since you are deffering you should be able to do it all over the net - natstar would know all about this I think so she could confirm if you wanna ask her.

You only get offered *one* CSP and/or *one* DFEE place per round per state. You can recieve offers from more than one state but you most likely would have to choose which you wish to accept - even though your preferences would continue to be entered through each round in each state so you may have the option of choosing offers from other rounds. I would check with UAC/VTAC though on that last bit.

I just want to double check this....as well as changing the order of preferences, I can also ADD NEW preferences before 5th of Jan? Because on the inside front cover of the UAC guide it said that the last date for applications to be included in the Main Round was on the 9th of December? I'm a little confused...

Essentially Carnavour, you can change your preferences before January 5th...im not sure if that includes putting your new course there...I do know that I got an irregular offer and thats if you don't get your top 5 choices If you are still unsure check the UAC side all is listed there. The UAC refers to when you can put in your preferences into the UAC server without being charged a late fee.

Kami is right. You can get only one offer per state. The date of which you have to accept it is on the offer letter sent. You are only allowed to accept one offer from one state. However, if you choose not to accept a first round offer. i.e. i thought about it 2 years ago. I did the HSC and landed in Victoria. You have to decide because the offer expires after a certain time, and wait for the next round to see if you get another offer...it's a bit like tempting fate though! because there are some people who regret doing that! hope this helps..

Sorry, I'm a bit slow right now. Just to clear it all up, I can recieve an offer from more than one university in the same state, and then I have to choose right?

Okies, well the two teaching degrees that you are most likely to get into right off the bat are ACU's BTeaching(Secondary:Technology)/BArts and MQ's BScience with DipEducation.

If you can't make the cutoff for these degrees then go for Computer Science or IT degrees and once that degree is finished undertake a graduate Diploma in Education(or equivalent) which would upgrade you to secondary teacher status.

If you can't gain entry to any of the aforementioned uni degrees then if you do an IT diploma at MQ, UTS or UWS then you are guaranteed entry into the second year of an IT bachelor at that uni. It also may be possible to do an IT diploma or advanced diploma at TAFE which may give you a more competitive admissions index and approximately a year to a year and a half of credit in a relevant bachelor. Once you finish that bachelor, then do the grad dip ed as mentioned earlier..and voila, you are an IPT/SDD/IT teacher at high school.

There is also the option of transferring from a degree with a lower cutoff to get into the degree of your choice.

Hope some of this helps.:)

Thanks for the reply Kami, i had another question. What is the difference between ACU's BTeaching(Secondary:Technology)/BArts and B Teaching/B Arts (Secondary–Computing) ?
which course is better for me to become an I.T teacher?
And wat about B art is it worth doing? or should i just go for the direct course in I.T?

I think its virtually identical, by the look of it you teach computing at high schools after both - its just you do more computing in one than the other. And if you have no interest in the B Arts subjects then I'd suggest you stear clear of them.
