brazil has abandoned its ethanol project because:
  • it is too costly to distil ethanol in order to obtain a high concentration
  • large areas of land needed to be cleared in order to grow crops to supply glucose
  • smelly fermentation wastes pose an environmental problem

feedstock? does that mean what ethanol is made of?

if it is, ethanol is made from glucose with yeast as a catalyst. the glucose can be extracted from wheat, sugar cane, fruits and grains - but a more economical source is the waste liquor from sugar canes, called molasses.

C6H12O6(aq) yeast cat.> 2C2H5OH(aq) + CO2(g)

i don't know if i actually answered your question.

hehe, well i guess half.

but i still dun get why ethanol production was more viable in brazil than in australia... as in how did the project begin and how it went in its trial.

it began because brazil spent large amounts of money on imported petrol, and obviously it didn't go very well for the above reasons
you don't need to know about the brazil ethanol project in detail. just mention it when answering an ethanol question.

For subscripts you do < sub >< /sub > without the spaces and for superscript its < sup >< /sup > Try it.

Up in northern Queensland ethanol is being produced as a by-product of the suagr can that they produce as this gets rid of the waste from the sugar cane.

And then crusty petrol stations use it as a fuel extender!
