I really want to do chemical engineering but after flunking my first english hsc test im not too sure i will get the atar cut off required
At USYD currently the atar cut off is 86.80
I feel confident that I got a band 6 in bio and band 5 in IPT but with my english exam im pretty sure my atar will be affected alot by it
Are there any alternative pathways into engineering ?

I guarantee you that a LOT of kids screwed up in the english exams. A LOT. But that's okay! The exam will be scaled and it possibly won't affect you too badly, especially if you attend a school that generally performs well in the HSC. If you're getting band 5s and 6s in your other subjects I'm sure you'll be fine. I think some of the engineering universities look past the english marks as they realise english skills are only relevant when writing essays for assignments. That's why they do bonus points! If you're up there with your maths, chemistry and physics (which I really hope you're doing esp. Chemistry if you want to do chemical engineering like me :p ), you'll be rewarded and it will all be fine! Just work as hard as you can for your remaining exams and even if you don't get the atar you need, there are always other pathways like transferring from other universities :)

You're probably fine but this may help you or others.

Some useful sites for bonus points/flexible entry. Many unis also run uni entry courses that last a year or you can look at TAFE options.

I jst got my atar and hsc results and got 90.80 so i guess english didn't affect me too badly as I scored 86/100 in it but decided not to do engineering
