See earlier post about bus stop guy at mardi gras for another tale of odd pick ups.

Ok... I only ever seem to attract guys who kinda creep me out! What is with that!

Here is another doozy of a story.

Ok, we need to rewind to last year. I was walking home from the uni library on a Sunday afternoon. This car pulls up next to me and this guy gets out. I am already a little freaked because this is a quiet-ish st. He comes up to me (I am still walking) and tells me he saw me at the library and followed me (great way to get a positive reaction from me)... he tells me he would like to get to know me better can he have my number. I basically say that I can't give out my number right now, but wanting to get out of the situation I say why don't you give me your email.... he does... then I say I have to go and he offers to drive me home in his car (which spooked me) and I was like no I am fine thanks and said farewell... the whole thing kinda spooked me, I think because of the car and quiet street thing. Plus this guy was quite a big African guy so there was a physical threat consideration as well.

So I was at the supermarket tonight in the carpark (kinda deserted location again) and who should come up to me but the same guy! Apparently he saw me at the library once but when he came to find me I was gone. Apparently he thinks of me often and would like to stay in touch. So I say sorry I lost your email last time, and he writes it down again for me. Then he asks how I have been etc (except he asks the same question like three times) and then he asks for my mobile number again, which I don't give away after bad experiences previously so I make up a lame excuse why i can't give him my number. He says he really likes me blah blah and wants to get to know me better.

I was kinda spooked again (bad location choices all the time by this guy) but he seems quite harmless. His grasp of English is not terrific though, and he seems considerably older then me (like at least 5 years older). He wasn't ugly or anything at all, but I'm not sure if he is my type.

I wish someone would pick me up in a normal non stalker-esque way! Another thing that is playing on my mind is maybe it's because I think that I am not attractive and hence I can't understand why these people are putting moves on me unless they have some kind of sinister motive. Maybe I am the screwed up one... I just don't know!!!!

What should I do? Just "be friends"? Via email? He seems to be pushing for something more very quickly.... don't want to lead him on but don't want to be a snobby bitch.

And yes do you think I am thinking rationally or am I screwed up in the head due to my own possibly warped self image?

Well, the weird thing is that I rarely go to the library.

Why do I only ever get hit on by people who I would place in the category of stalker! Why!!!

i dont really think this African fellow is being ALL that creppy...like he is just really keen...at least he is not pressuring you or anything...he is just confident and willing to make the effort...perhaps he is a little too foward...but you get that.

In my experience, if something makes you feel uncomfortable then there's an excellent reason for it. I think it's perfectly reasonable to be put off by someone approaching you in that manner (And I do recall that I said something fairly similar in the bus dude thread as well). Come to think of it, it's perfectly reasonable to be put off by someone approaching you in any manner, it's about how you feel.

Regardless, if he's coming across as that eager you'd have to stop and ask yourself is that really what you're up for? I guess you could always give it a spin, but if you feel hesitant in the first place you'd have to give it some serious thought first :)

Ok, the responses thus far are making me sound less crazy. Yay.

I think it is just the whole thing that everytime I get hit on the guy engages in freaky stalker like activity. So hence I was thinking maybe it was me or something....

I prefer guys who have confidence, but are not overconfident. Hmm.... maybe the type of guy I am after is the type who is too shy to ask me out.... ARGH am I doomed to be single forever lol.

well i (in a way) know how u feel!! in year 10, i was hit on by an african dude 2!!! but i wasn't as nice as u. I ignored him and kept on walking!!! in the same year, this tongan guy (thats wat he told me) kept trying to talk to me while i was walking home!!! He kept asking Q's, and i tried to be nice - but this guy was sooo annoying!!! so finally i told him that my dad, and uncle (who were big islanda guys) were really overprotective and waiting for me at home (i had gone to the shops to buy something). then he left me alone!!! But, like a few months later, he tried to hit on me again!! he didn't rememba me, so i told him that i was only 12. then he left!!!

oh, one more story. Just this Christmas holidays, i was on my way home from the train station, and these african guys were full giving me the eye, and looking me up & down!!! *shudder* damn that was creepy!!! i practically ran all the way home!!!

It wasn't even at the library though.... he like followed me as I walked home from the library in his car!!!!

If it was at the actual library my reaction may have been a bit different!

Out of interest, what do you consider a normal pick up?

Anyway, don't lead the guy on, tell him that you're not interested in him, or make up a plausible lie, like you're taken and stick to it.

that little voice in ur head saying "something is wrong" ?

thats thousands of years of evolution working. (maybe)

i would do everything i can to stay the hell away from that guy. stop walking down that street, stop going to that supermarket, whatever.

he might very well be a nice guy, but the circumstances show that he can be quite dangerous. i dont think it has anything to do with low self esteem or whatever.

you don't just follow a woman in a car, jump out and try and pick up. dont email him. avoid him at all costs.

LOL the guy seems creepy...
I always get hit on by creepy 40 something year old guys. One time I was walking from Liverpool Westfield to the station, and then some dude started asking me if I was single and if I wanted to get to know him. Ew? So I just looked at him like he was a retard and put my headphones back in my ears and hurried away.
