i just put
H2PO4 + H20 --> HPO4 + H3O+
proton donor hence acid
H2PO4 + H20 --> H3PO4 + OH-
proton acceptor hence base...

that was all :eek:... amphiprotic do occur under different conditions.. but ur going to have trouble getting pure OH and pure H30 conditions to occur in any situation... the solution ur still adding ur H2PO4 to is gonna be water... u cant add it to either OH- or H3O+.... if some1 can correct me plz do so coz i just spoke complete bs..

ACID: H2PO4 + H2O --> HPO4 + H3O (produces H3O ions)
BASE: H2PO4 + HCl --> H3PO4 + Cl (receives a proton)

I'm not sure about the validity of the second eqn.

:O... i dont know tat HCl works.. it may though if thats how the second equation occurs.. however i dont think it does...

H2PO4 + HCl should produce salt and water... I'm done for.

H2PO4 + HCl --> ___________ someone help me out with the salt/water bit.

first bit wrong but equations were alright

i think that i gave the definition for amphoteric substances instead of amphiprotic. i wrote about being able to act as an acid or a bise instead of being able to accept or donate hydrogen ions. but its all good cause my equations were good with water and the hydronium ion as well as hyroxide into water.

ummmm Komaticom last time i checked and acid + an acid doesnt give saly plus water.. thats Acid + Base.. ur equation couldnt possibly give you water :eek:

I think it just had to be shown reacting with water. It acts as a proton donor, making H3O and a proton acceptor, making OH.

im such a jackass.. i KNEW that answer, but i said "an amphiprotic substance has more than one proton" and i showed it donating first the one, then the other H ion to water
