Well usually you just analyse a newspaper article by stating the conventions they use to convey their message. This might include newspaper stucture. ie. Byline, photo/graphic, page layout etc.
Then you would follow on by analysing the litertary techniques used to give meaning to the text. Litretary techniques include emotive language, sentence structure, similies, metaphors, onamatopeia, oxymorons, punctuation and point of view.

o in essence, your essay structure would look something similar to this:

1) State the convention

2) Describe how this convention gives meaning.

yeh thats basically it
u look at:
1. the order in which things catch ur eye such the say theres a big picture in the article and u see this before the heading. then u explain what the effect of this is
2. the formatt of the article eg the columns
3. the language used

well thats all i can think of at the moment

uses the main concepts e.g tone, diction, syntax, layout.

From a journalism student... another important thing to look at is the type of lead used because that in itself is a newspaper article technique. The lead is the start of the story for those that don't know. Often a journalist will use a delayed lead (as opposed to a hard news lead, where the essential information is contained, such as who/when/what) to create a scene, describe a scenario or give insight in to what angle the article will take, so you should always look at the lead.

Also, look at who is quoted in the article. Question the integrity/reliability of who has been interviewed. E.g. a news technique is to gain info from an expert to back up a point of view

The language used (such a factual vs sensationalized) is also something to look at, and tells you a lot about the style of the article.

Hope this helps a little.

context + values, same old story.

what is the context and how (techniques used, convetions of form - this is where the newspaper htings like lead, tone, voice, layout etc come in) is it portrayed. what are the inherent values of the text and how (techniques again) are they conveyed. how does the context effect the values and the portrayal of both (audience, purpose).

these are the three things you TYPICALLY (you can still get left field questions) need to adress in and analysis of a text. anyway, its a good place to start.
