Why is it in physics, the positive terminal is the anode, but in chemistry, the anode is the negative terminal? how does this work out in the end where you have the chemistry of such physics applications?

wait i'll try...

this is for the cathode tube, by definition:

anode is where anions (-ve ions) migrate to

cathode is where cations (+ve ions) migrate to

so this means that electrons must migrate from cathode to anode since electron is (-vely charged ions). so anode must be positively charged to attract the negatively charged electrons. :)

hsc has nothing to do with physics LOL.... wait there is more...

and this is different in a galvanic cell because there are no external voltage being applied and current is produced by reactions, so simply the signs is reversed. i can explain this more but it gets kinda confusing.

and in chemistry an electrolytic cell which needs an external current like the cathode tube, has the same terminals signs as cathode tube. :)

An electron is a negatively charged particle not an ion.

LOL. its suppose to be electrons are -vely charged like -vely charged ions. ;)

edit: thats why they should make science tests all multiple choice or calculations and diagram drawing... hundreds of marks lost by careless phrasing of a statement.

see i can correct you as well... an ion is a particle... therefore electron is an ion. LOL

so it should really be "subatomic" particle.

All I remember was those stupid acronyms of LEOA and GERC! And that was from 3 years ago :(

A dog has a tongue, you have a tongue, therefore you are a dog. A dog likes mating with outher dogs. Therefore you like mating with dogs.

ok to tell it in laymans terms...they anode is the anode and the cathode is the cathode just because it is...

there IS no logical reason as such why the polarities of the electrodes should be different in Physics and Chemistry...just that once they decide on naming something then by convention that name sticks...just like the north pole of the earth is merely geographic north but not magnetic north.....

Dogs try to mate with anything that moves (and sometimes things that dont) they cant tell the difference between a bitch a blanket and someones leg.

what are LEOA and GERC?
LEOA = Loss of Electrons is Oxidation at the Anode
GERC = Gain of Electrons is Reduction at the Cathode

.. then again, I'm talking Chemistry in the Physics forum :(
