Does anyone do law at ANU or Sydney etc?

Is ANU better/worse for Law and why?

This is because Sydney uni etc have UAI entry marks of 99.? etc wheras ANU is 95.

i do law at ANU and i love it here

Depends what u like - in sydney u can get ur uai of 99 to get in but then you have a class of about 600ish i think they have and even there tutorial/seminar groups are rather large. Friend of mine goes there and he was saying its rather impersonal.

Whereas at ANU there is abotu 300 or so law students - and tutorials / seminars are very personal as there are only 20 or so in each one.

So it depends on what u like in regards to that - if u want something more personal ANU is definently the way to go.

And then with ANU u have the High court, Family court, federal courts here. If u want to do international law its the perfect spot because u ahve all the embasisies etc here - plus they have some great excahnge programs. The Dean / subdean of law was saying they try to get guest speakers in etc.

And just personally i have found the lectures really really good -

With extra places made available in 2005, how come Usyd law is still at 99.6? Does anyone know how long it has been at this level?

They are fixing it here, regardless of some 'supply and demand'.

Oh yeah, I forgot that some Universities artificially inflate their UAI cut-offs as a matter of "prestige". UNSW went down to 99.15, USYD remained at 99.6 (but you should see USYDs and UNSWs fee-paying cut-offs! Especially compare main and late round.)

UNSW Late Commonwealth - 99.15 (No Vacancies)
UNSW Main Fee - 94.15
UNSW Late Fee - 94.35 (No Vacancies)

USYD Main Commonwealth - 99.60
USYD Late Commonwealth - 99.65 (No Vacancies)
USYD Main Fee - 98.15
USYD Late Fee - 96.45 (No vacancies)

If you think about it, USYD's UAI cut-offs are a bit suspecious, especially when you think about how their Fee playing places behave. Generally, the UAI is meant to rise somewhat in later rounds, it means people are accepting the offer, but at USYD the UAI required for the Fee playing place drops considerably. I think it's USYD playing silly games re: UAI cut-offs and playing on the idea it reflects some prestige.

Sydney only manages to stay afloat because of its prestige - so if they ARE fixing UAI scores - I can't blame them . I read an SMH article recently, where I think it was the dean of Sydney's law school was saying how the aim of Usyd law was to keep tutes and seminars small (small meaning forty or so people) while at ANU we have tutes with around 20 people in each class.

ANU has one of the best law schools in the country, and depending on what you want to combine your law degree with, ANU also has the (or one of the) best science faculties in the country, and also apparently a rather good economics/commerce faculty.

Also, running on what my friends say, the lecturers at Sydney are pricks

Though, I'll warn you in advance - Canberra is quite a bit different to Sydney (if you live in Sydney at the moment) and it's a pretty big change, though if your going to live in college for your first year, you'll be enjoying yourself regardless.

Actually the people are great, and are much friendlier than in Sydney (both off and on campus).

My main problems with Canberra are :

- If you don't have a car, getting to certain places (like Dickson [for Chinese, though there is good yum cha within a walk of the university], Belconnen [Westfield and DAN MURPHIES] or Fyshwick [for porn, op shops and work]) is a real pain in the arse, because even though buses here are literally on the dot, they take about three times as long to get to places as it would by car. On the upside though, if you have a bike (If you don't have one, get one before you come down) you can pretty much get anywhere without a problem.

- 7c/mg for internet in the colleges (though you get access to a free p2p network - that downloads at 3mg/sec)

Is there a filter on the internet connection to prevent you from accessing porn etc?
I have a memory from somewhere that matrons(or whoever) can place restrictions on the people who do not behave in a 'morally responsible' manner.

BTW 7c/mb is excessive. I pay $50 for 20gb a month. 20gb at 7c/mb would cost $1400!

No, not at one of the ANU run colleges anyway (Bruce, BG, Fenner). I wouldn't be surprised if it happened at one of the others though. *shrugs*.

And yes it is, but you can game and download *stuff* off the p2p, plus all anu sites are free (as well as your anu email) all you pay for is chat, which doesn't eat much and random browsing.

The only thing you miss out on are mmporgs =(
