Lake Burley Griffin to Expand

Lake Burley Griffin is set for a major revamp after a special meeting today between Chief Minister Jon Stanhope, the National Capital Authority and the Australian National University. The plans include widening the Eastern basin to allow for more sporting activities, a lengthening of the rowing course near the Western end of the lake and, at the special request of the ANU, the digging up of Clunies Ross St to replace it with a canal. The idea for the canal was first raised by ANU Vice Chancellor Ian Chubb, "we realised that after raising the tariffs at our residential halls, the only students who would be able to afford living on campus were from Sydney's North Shore. So we have decided to make them feel at home as best as possible." Funding for the new canal will come from a $250 campus accommodation levy that all students living in ANU's residential halls and colleges will have to pay at the start of next year. Concerns about the new developments have already started to be voiced. Opposition planning minister Simon Corbell believes that the new canal is just a scheme by the Government to direct traffic to the soon to be opened Gungahlin drive extension. While ANU Students Association President Aparna Rao says, "here is another example that university will no longer be within the financial reach of everyday Australians." Ms Rao has pledged to take legal action against the proposed canal.
