Is it possible to get a band 5 in the end overall? School rank 202 if that's helpful say if I do well in externals

yes, work your ass off and you'll be able to. Remember, 50% of it is down to your own exam mark, so for sure it is possible if you do well

I don't think it's possible. Provided he does well externally, it'll come down to how well his cohort performs. And if they don't perform well, his 50th rank will deny him the chance to get band 6

he said band 5. And still, it's not impossible. You're assuming his cohort is all going to go bad
