Here's some good and some bad. I'll let you be the judge of which is which. But they all have change and journey in them. These are all very contemporary but according to the BOS, all texts have the same value
- This Lullabye by Sarah Dessin
- Seducing Mr McLean by Loubna Haikal
- White Oleander by cannot remember
- Where the Heart Is by cannot remember
- A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks
- Bergdorf Blondes by Plum Sykes
- Checkers by John Marsden
- Follow the Blue by Brigid Lowry
- Highway Guitar Rose by Brigid Lowry
- The Sky in Silver Lace by Robyn Klein
Half that list is made up of Australian authors, which gives it a balance in the eyes of teachers. You may know the movies of some of these novels, but I recommend ditching everything you know about the movies and reading the books at face value, as they become much more powerful and useful texts. They explore a range of contexts and styles which is useful.
I hope this helps!
