ok..yes theoretically they'll give you a first round offer based on your umat mark and if you successfuly get through the interview ie. BEFORE the uai is released....if you screw up ur uai that place will no longer be open to you....like my friend got an offer right after she did her umat exam and interview...she got 1st round offers into medicine...luckily she did well in her hsc and uai and got offered 2nd round offer @ newcastle....this is because UMAT give you a offer through your umat score and UAC give you an offer based on your uai....

just to confuse you..thats another thing you need to take into consideration..if you ace umat and the interview and you get offered a place...when uac given out their 1st/2nd/3rd round offers you MAY not get one in the first round...thats what happened to my friend...she got offered a 1st round offer through umat but then when uac brang out their 1st round offers she didnt get one and she was so upset...and she was going to do medical science instead...and then in 2nd round offers she got one....

in a nut shell: YES they hand out offers before uais are released :p

hope this time i answered the question....:D
ok, i understand. no wait .. i don't. you said "if you ace umat and the interview and you get offered a place...when uac given out their 1st/2nd/3rd round offers you MAY not get one in the first round..." so ... the uni has to give you an offer for the medicine course ... and UAC has to approve of that offer (after the actual UAI results come out?)

theres also a rumour going around you have to get 99-100 estimated UAI for a first round inteview at my school. is that true? because my uai is dying at around 95 currently.

I doubt there's allotments by school. These things are done through UAC and UMAT.

Besides, you won't know what your UAI will be till you do the exams and get the results back. Estimatd UAIs should be taken with a nice large grain of salt. You shouldn't buy too much into that rumour.

yes...umat will give u an offer if you ace your umat and interview...IF uac sees that your uai is good enough then they'll give u 1st/2nd/3rd offer @ university....u do not have to get 99-100 thats complete bullshit..my friend got 93 and she got in...a uai of 95 is great..dont listen to rumous listen to people who are currently at uni and know the process involved

and yes WHATEVER you do..and whatever else you want to beleive...dont beleive those stupid "uai estimate things"...like SAM etc etc...uais are based on so many things besides from marks and even ranks...you have absolutely no control over it and its so complex that it cannot be fathomed by even the best of teachers.....my advice..study hard, get your ranks up and do the freaking best you can...saying that your uai is dying at around 95 (even though its a good uai)gives me a sense of you esimating it through some form of random calculation..and honestly the difference between 95 and 98 is SO slim in terms of how uac calcuates it...at that stage you really have no control over whatsoever..2 people who may have written the exact same answers for the exact same answers will get a differnt uai because for example they go to different schools.....

attempting to estimate you uai is pointless..you can get a minor idea where you fit...like betwen 70-80 or 80-90...but you'll never get it down to an estimate of 95.66

just chill..the hsc makes you stress so much..and at the end you'll see that it really wasnt so bad :D

Lol, my friend could have gotten into UNSW Medicine--she got a UAI of aruond 97, and I think that was what was predicted for her, but her UMAT was outstanding--229 from memory, so she got interview and everything. But she wants to do dentistry, so she opted out instead.

Look, the UAI is so hazy--dora_18 is right--even the best of teachers won't know. Just put your head down and go, because that's all you can control--you cannot control how the rest of the state goes, or how UAC stuffs around with your marks to get a UAI. If you really wanna go for medicine, acing UMAT is your best chance because you're not likely to know what the school would predict for you, or what the minimum UMAT score required for x UAI is to score an interview. At least you sorta know where you're going with your UMAT.

ESTIMATED UAI right? do they also hand out offers before the actual UAIs are released?
it depends which uni...most unis dont give out late round offers for interview, but unsw gives around 100 late round interviews, using actual uais.

ok dora_18...stop trying to pretend you know alot of "inside" info on getting into medicine at unsw and what medicine is really like.
know this sounds idiotic but it happens) you think it'll be like greys anatomy..or scrubs.
LOL..i dont know what your idea of medicine is but it is a LOT like scrubs and gray's anatomy,..shitty hours, HEAPS of responsiblitiy....just without the humour.

they want doctors who can support them and get through a certain problem
thats what most doctors do...even the ones with very high UAIs

just as well that they introduced the freaking umat
.
no..the whole umat is stupid.. a lot of ppl bum out in the umat then do it the next year of completeing shit loads of prep courses, then get in with massive UMATs. so.....wat, ur telling me that in 2004 they dont hav wat it takes to be a doctor but in 2005 they suddenly hav "it"
personally, i think they should introduce something like GAMSAT, where theres a science component in it...i mean, like theres all these people who do humanities with no sciences whatsoever and think that they'll love to study pharmcology, biochem, physiology, anatomy, etc....thats simply stupid..sure..u need to know how to talk to ppl, but whats the point if you dont know how to correctly diagnose them through teh application of basic clincal sciences...?

99.99 in every exam think they'll also make good doctors...what a load of crap....
and theres ppl like you who think that you'll have hours to just sit next to the patient and talk to them like they're your best friend...and then maybe finally get a diagnosis....
no one knows that they'll be a good doctor at the start of med school...yes, even those with great socialising skills and huge UMAT scores and the best interview marks...
hmmm.... seeing as you're at health science....you must be one of those people who didnt get into med and are trying to undermine the quality of the students who did...thats just lame...

and just one more thing...you dont need a "passion" to do a job. Thats just crap ppl make up....i mean, anyone would clean toilets every day if they were given a million dollars to do it, even if it wasnt their passion.. You go to university to get a degree; to get a job...if you want to do something cause it's your passion, then thats a hobby..
A hobby and job are two different things. just because you dont have the passion for something, it does not mean you cant do it properly.

yeh you're right...i mean the people who i communicate with on a daily basis and live with are telling me complete crap...its all a lie! everyone listen to "funny bunny" ....ever thought through your complete ignorance that eveyone has a different opinion??? that may be your outlook but other people may think something else.....for eg im not saying DO THIS THIS IS WHAT MAKES A GOOD DOCTOR....im just saying its what other people who study medicine say...you clearly have a different opinion....who knows at the end of the day who'll make the better doctor....
and im not just listening to "friends" both my parents are doctors...do you think they know what they're talking about or are they wrong as well?

So if I were to do pharmacy, but if I don't get the UAI required but get the STAT would I still be able to make it in? Do you have an interview as well?

I want to either do pharmacy or medical science. The MBBS requires a UAI of at least 99.90 or 99.95 I think, to be able to do it, and some also require you to sit the UMAT or STAT test depending on the university

Check the UAC website and look for the courses and their UAI or actually go to the university and search for the courses
Isn't pharmacy 96? It can't be 99...

im not just listening to "friends" both my parents are doctors.
yet you say that medicine isnt like scrubs or gray's anatomy.
im just saying its what other people who study medicine say...you clearly have a different opinion
exactly..i'm simply here to give the other side of the argument ..you seem to think that high uai=bad doctor whilst lower uai=good doctor.
g im not saying DO THIS THIS IS WHAT MAKES A GOOD DOCTOR....
rite...when you say "99.99 in every exam think they'll also make good doctors...what a load of crap...." you seem to imply that you DO know what makes a good doctor..

sorry, i retract my comment about u believeing you know the inside info on unsw... at the end of the post , i realised that u were tlaking about UNCLE , not UNSW.

Plz remember that this IS a forum and as such, ur posts are not immune to any criticism....

You're going to be one screwed up doctor when you finish. TV shows popularise the medical industry and reality bears very little resemblence to what you see on TV

Why do people drop out then? It's fine to say that sure, if you're paid a million dollars, you'll do anything. But eventually you will come to a point and realise that if you didn't like it at the end, it's going to be very hard to get through.

dude..hav u even read my previous comments....i was referring to the fact that med is like scrubs/gray's anatomy in terms of the crappy work hours, and loads of responsibility, WITHOUT the humour.....this is coming from a lot of registers/interns, who i've talked to..
simply stringing a few words together, does not mean that you have built a strong argument.
Why do people drop out then?
well...mayb it's too just too difficult to balance study /social life.....u seem to think it's only becasue thy do not hav a passion for it....thats lame...u think that everyone who is currently happy with their job has a passion for that job. there are other things to be happy about. eg. ease of work/little stress, the money, job security, etc
But eventually you will come to a point and realise that if you didn't like it at the end, it's going to be very hard to get through.
having a passion for medicine and liking medicine/not mind practising medicine is totally different. as i've said before, that's the difference between a hobby and a job.. Anyway, you might not have a passion for something but it does not mean that its going to be difficult to get through. That being said, having a passion does not mean that it will be easy to get through...It all depends on your abilities and knowledge, NOT passion.

for the record i never said that i thought that a lower uai meant a better doctor and higher uai meant a worse one..i just said that OTHER factors attribute

and thanks so much for telling me my parents and friends are wrong, i mean im sure that 2 head surgeons at a hospital and their interns have no idea in hell what theyre talking about right..ill be sure to let them know that they are acctualy doing on a daily basis is living the life of " Dr Derek Shepard" and "Dr Addison Shepard" from Greys Anatomy??...thats the last thing im saying in this thread...

you carry on and think that passion doesnt drive good doctors and that its only about "abilities and knowledge"...it brings me to a climactic conclusion- why the HELL did you enter medicine?

oh yeh dont forget to watch scrubs tonight!!! 11.15pm ch7!!!...my friends tell me that is was a HUGE attributing factor to their success

lol...goodluck to you man

ummm...no...im just saying that it doesnt take passion to be a good doctor...
doing on a daily basis is living the life of " Dr Derek Shepard" and "Dr Addison Shepard" from Greys Anatomy??..
yet again..u take things i've never said and use them in an argument....i only said the responsibily and the hours are like gray's and scrubs..not their personal lives...
NEXT time actually read my posts....if u want to become a doctor, u need to learn how to LISTEN to patients...
2 head surgeons at a hospital
YEAH,..u sure do know med jargon dont u>!!>lol
OTHER factors attribute
u never said that... u only talked about the high uai achieveres not being good doctors..
why the HELL did you enter medicine?
well...everything..helping people is just a bonus...ANYWAY thats besides the point..the important thing is that i am in medicine, whilst u are not....Obviosuly, then ur "drive" to do medicine wasnt strong enough for u to make it into med first round.

oh okay thanks for the tip! is that before or after i tell them that im not passionate about being their doctor?

YEAH,..u sure do know med jargon dont u>!!>lol
i dont know why you think im lying..but i really find it amusing..head of paediatrics at Bayley Seton Hospital, New York..and the other obgyn...do you want their pager numbers or are u pretty much done?

this is my favourite comment from you yet though...when asked why you want to do medicine...."everything" is a great answer!!

well...everything..helping people is just a bonus
and helping people is "just' a bonus....you should save this conversation and show it to future patients...

..ANYWAY thats besides the point..the important thing is that i am in medicine, whilst u are not....Obviosuly, then ur "drive" to do medicine wasnt strong enough for u to make it into med first round.
what makes you think i want to do medicine? maybe one day yes..but i came here on exchange..met a lot of people that happen to do medicine...and if theres a good chance of any more people out there that have your kind of attitude towards it then i doubt ill even be attempting to enter medicine in Australia
