I'm doing it right now and I think it definitely does push you to get better at japanese, especially more casual, everyday language. I think just being exposed to more difficult language is good and the exposure to more japanese helps you to get more fluent and used to it. To be honest it's not easy but after a while you'll get used to harder phrases and vocabulary and it sounds like that would align with your goals to become more fluent, even if you don't end up getting good marks, your japanese will improve and that will help you with the normal course. I don't find it particularly stressful but I'm not super serious about doing well so that might be why, I think you should have a look at what the course entails and that will help you figure things out. So look into, the movie and analysis, the writing (fanfic) you do for the movie, the monologue and essay. It'll give you an idea. Plus there are some support materials that help you understand the level of language you need to comprehend.

I did it last year and here is what I think:

It definitely pushes your japanese beyond continuers - you need to know how to use what you have learnt to explain broader social commentary. I think this can seem really hard at the start but it becomes a lot easier as you do it more often. I felt that even though it was one unit, it felt more like 1.5 units / 2 units of work

As well, your questions for your essays and oral exams will be greatly influenced by two factors: your prescribed text and its themes, and overall themes. And this is a lesser influence, but you will see common tropes among the years, like japanese always loves a good tradition vs modernity essay question.

For example, the 2024 hsc question (B):
You are participating in a speech contest. The topic is ‘Keeping small communities alive will enrich people’s lives’. Write the script of your speech, giving your point of view.

You have to be able to explain that in relation to this topic, you have a point which supports this idea (tradition is kept alive, maintains the diversity of culture, small communities can have a greater impact on people who choose to leave the community (e.g. people who grew up there)) and you also have a point which negates this idea (sorry I can't think of any).

Fortunately, this is the essay question which you get 40 minutes to work on, and 10 minutes of reading time. So the essay will be a bit harder than the oral exam.

The oral exam is probably the part I was most stressed for because there is such short time to prepare and speak for 3 minutes. Some students prepared responses to questions they had done before but I didn't. My teacher told me that you could get absolutely any question that relates somewhat to your text so it was a bit pointless to memorise responses because otherwise you would be memorising hundreds of examples. I think the oral exam really helps people who can work quickly (debaters mostly) and make up arguments which are solid. (they don't have to be perfect, they just have to sound good)

Also a really important note: A lot of markers won't really care about you using fancy kanji and fancy words, they want responses that they can read which they understand what you are arguing for / against. A lot of marking for extension is feedback like "this verb doesn't really fit the context" or "try to rephrase this"
