Try Pages/iWork. Its quicker than Word (but it doesnt have all the features) but if you only want a basic wordprocessor with spellcheck etc

We can reccommend alternate apps to Word for Apples until the cows come home, but Asqy may not be permitted to install them on the uni computers.

Sorry, I must have misread this post to mean that he was using Macs at uni.
