What? Stop being so fobby and make sense!

I don't need to bother saying my stuff because my uni/course is in my sig and my school details are in my profile...unless I pulled the HSC subjects, which were Eng Adv, Maths, JaX, MH, Physics.

Hehe very true.

So is Keen a girl? I didn't realise I don't know anything about...Keen.

(Yes! Use of gender specific article averted!)

Who're you calling a girl Lex!

No 18yo from Central QLD in 2nd year med until proven otherwise (ahhh a bit of a worry wating for results, first wait is over tomorrow).
Just relaxing for now, wasting time on the internet.

The rest is a secret unless you ask and then we'll see.

Keen :D

inasero, do you feel that way because you're an interstate student or is it for the general student pop?

Well, I have a feeling it might not just be myself with these feelings. You see, when you're in high school, there's a fairly small population of students who you grow up with over six years and play sport with in the same teams so I guess you have a chance to 'belong'. Well the first thing you will notice in Uni is how big it is and the great diversity of people studying there. The fact of the matter is that Uni is a degree factory and they're just interested in pulling you through the conveyor belt and giving you a piece of paper at the end of a couple of years. So this confirms my personal maxim that being proud of an organization (like a school, or a uni, or even a country for that matter) is foolish since it's actually the people that you associate with.

Disclaimer: By the way you might think that displaying my uni logo in my signature might contradict what I just said, I merely put it there to let people know I study here :p

Hmm Wilson I don't corroborate your views on degree factory, not entirely. I find that (at UTS:Science at least) the academics are most interested in us understanding and maintaining an interest in our course content. For the people who teach me, what counts isn't that I get the marks, but that I care about what I'm doing.

This to me reflects the true, ancient spirit of the University: a place were you go to learn simply because knowledge is a precious thing and learning is beautiful (I really hate agreeing with those hippies in the Student Assosciation, but they're right about this). Degree factory sounds more like what USyd is trying to do - exemplar gratia, Nursing is not profitable so they cut it loose.

As for schools, there are plenty I know (mostly teachers) who refer to James Ruse as a UAI factory. I won't comment until Alvin has had a chance to set his case, but it's that kind of attitude that's screwing up education (combined with the commercialisation of just about everything). People have moved away from universities as a place to explore wisdom and towards a world where university = money (Business faculty? What a nightmare!).

Very depressing thoughts.

I think I'll clean my room now.

perhaps you've got the long end of the stick...but I maintain that for my uni at least, it's just a commercial venture. Research is a highly lucrative business, and unless the uni can make a couple of grand off some hapless internationals, its no use funding undergrad courses (e.g. hence the discontinuation of many arts subjects from next year onwards).

I'm glad that your faculty have got it right though.

Hmm, I can't comment on Arts because I only know the Sydney unis - Everyone knows UNSW continues to offer Arts because it's profitable and they have strong international links, USyd is the traditional Arts uni and their faculty is very strong, while UTS doesn't even have an Arts faculty.

Though I did get the impression that for the most part, Science faculties in general function in a way similar to my own. How administratively flexible they are is another matter.

Hey Willy, I do have pride in our uni and im sure the others do as well. I admit uni is diff to school in that it's larger and u seem more insignificant. But that doesnt have anything to do with pride. Monash is helping me (letting me) achieve my ultimate goal and for that i give ultimate respect to it. And secondly, Monash is internationally renowned, so why wouldnt i be proud to say that i go to Monash?
Not having a go at u at all, but i jus feel that we shouldnt take some things for granted, that's all.

That may be the case with the uni as a whole, but I find Adelaide med is a great community amongst our year level and the years above us.
I absolutely love it and I think it's the greatest thing about med, now I don't know whether you have this at Monash but it's well and truly alive in Adelaide.

Cheers

No, it's just straight Med, we've got about 140 students with 40 of them international.
But a good community.
