Consider the function f(x) = 2 - x^(2) - e^(2x)

It is known that the function has a stationary point near x = -1/2

Calculate a better approximation for the location (x value only) of the stationary point using Newton's approximation method to 2 decimal places. (4 marks)

Unfortunately I don't have the answers but my classmates said that you had to use the 1st derivative as well as the 2nd derivative instead of your original function and the 1st derivative.

Help me out?

You are solving the equation f'(x) and trying to find the x-values. Hence the function you are trying to approximate the roots is g(x) = f'(x), then just apply the usual Newton's method to g(x)

Lol, this was in my first assessment :)

It says find stat pt not root, meaning you have to start with first derivative, not the function.
