ok heres the deal, im accelerating in chemistry this year, and i am hoping to do pretty well in the HSC like 92/100 raw exam mark, but i have done really bad in my assessments:

assesments (average): 60%

trial: 71/92 (stupid cssa paper!)

i am accelerating with my friend who is came first in the class of three ppl. (3 ppl doing chem this yr)

his marks are:

assessments: 80%

trial: 72/92

considering my rank of 2/3 and the marks between me and my friend are considerable, can i still get a UAI of 99+ if i do extremely well in all my other subjects next year? (phys, 4u maths, 3u eng, bio)

are my dreams of medicine ruined?

NB: i am still in yr 11 so chem is the only subject i'm doin for HSC

You're doing 11 units next year, so if 10 of them are better than your chemistry results, they'll count instead.

If all three students in your class do well in the HSC exam, you'll end up with a high moderated assessment mark. As there are only three students, you will receive the average of your class's exam marks as your moderated assessment mark.

you only need 95 for medicine now that there is UMAT and Interview

so make sure you do lots of extra curricular activities

Just went to the UNSW open day talk - they say that, in reality, you need a UAI of 98+. There was that article in the paper where a girl with 96 got in, but i think you'd have to be pretty exceptional in terms of your UMAT and interview if you're going to get below 98.

I have no idea what the scaling for Chemistry is like, though, so you should look into that.

Also, UNSW isn't the only uni that offers med, there's something like 7 in Australia, and there's always Otago in NZ, which you need a uai of 80 to get into general health sciences, after which, with a good UMAT, you transfer into specialist areas in your second year.

And there's the USYd graduate program too.

It's just a matter of how badly you want to do med, i guess..

Yeah the thing is the third guy in our class got like 55% in the trials. If he does bad in the HSC (by bad i mean <band 5 ) will that bring my marks down considerably.

Also, i heard that since i'm accelerating i can repeat next yr, but how can i repeat if the hsc exam is after the start of yr 12?

As I said, your assessment mark will be set equal to the average of the three exam marks. That should let you work out the effect of one student performing poorly for yourself.

Your school can simply re-enrol you in the course after your exam, or even once school goes back in 2004, if you so choose.

perhaps i should keep my grievances to myself, but when u go into the HSC with a paper like last yr's chemistry paper, the first thing u should think to urself is "fark, they're gonna screw me over with the scaling"

No that's a tad exaggerated....

They don't ask you about extra-curricular activities in the interview, as I'm soon to verify, but they will ask you about your personal life in great depth. If you're nothing but a total study freak with no ability to speak articulately and form coherent sentences, then the interview will screw you over...

So getting involved in things like debating/public speaking might help your confidence...

yes I know. My point was that it isn't MANDATORY to get involved in 1001 different things, as it won't help in terms of knowledge, but the experience and confidence it entails would be beneficial.

How does that work? The candidature doesn't automatically do worse in their other subjects just because that particular paper was easy. It's not like they could tell the paper would be easier the year before when they decided to do HSC chemistry. It wasn't a problem for your year but it might be for this year and 2004 (as in "look how easy that 2002 HSC paper was I think I should chem").

This could be compounded due to the fact that 15% of the syllabus was cut for 2003 (same for physics though).

Chemistry and physics are roughly the same in terms of scaling I think (about the same as advanced english?).
