Hi,

There is probably something loosely related to what I'm asking somewhere within this forum... but I have a few questions relating specifically to the Arts/Commerce double degree, and double degrees in general and it would be great if someone could give me dome more info... theres not the much on the uni website unfortunatley.

- I understand a double degree does not involve a heavier worload, rather, it just takes a longer period of time?

- What is the admin side of it like? I hear timetabling different subjects and compromising between faculties can sometimes be impossible..

-How is the course set up? Do you do a year of commerce, a year of arts etc, or do you mix them up? Or is that flexible?

-How long would it take if I was to do 4 subjects per semester or whatever?

-Do you think it would be possible for me to work part time (in Human resources admin? 2 days a week whilst undertaking the degrees... or is that to much?

-Is it worthwhile or is it just a lot of stress and way to long at uni?

Yeahhh I was going to email a student but I just never got around to it and now its 2 days off preferences being due and I'm worried about making the wrong decision. I know I can always drop arts if I don't like it but I just don't want to stuff sround swapping and changing courses and prolonging my degree even more... gahhh I hate having to decide. Any help/advise you can give me would be GREAT :)

*yeah the workload will be the same

*you won't be the only one doing comm/arts and you're not the only one doing a double degree so they always try and ensure that there are no clashes between subjects even across different faculties. you should be fine to do all your subjects. they always try to work it so you can do all your subjects...thats the beauty of uni :)

*as for course structure...there's no strict rule or policy...you can essentially do it in any order you want provided you complete all the requirements of both degrees. but what will most likely happen is that you will be doing both commerce and arts subjects at the same time all throughout. of course if you're unsure as to whether you want to do arts you can always choose commerce subjects and drop the arts part.

* it will take you 4.5 years to finish the double degree.

*with commerce and arts being (relatively) low contact hours you should be able to fit all your uni commitments in 3 days quite easily if youre using the other two to work. if it becomes too much you can always try putting a subject off till summer or something...

* why do you want to do arts with commerce?

Basically this reason:

Arts gives alot more perspective to a Commerce degree. Employers might not look fondly on a single Arts degree, but do give creedence to the specialisation when combined with another degree.
AND I want to study stuff relating to employment relations and politics, as well as an asian language or two through an arts degree. Such subjects slot in nicely with a commerce degree, and relate particularly well to human resources management, which is the area of work I am most interested in entering after I finish uni. And theres the added factor that arts offers a lot of subjects I am interested in, as does commerce. I don't want to forgo one for the other..

And do it at UNSW if you want a flexible timetable.
I would if I could, trust me. But a) I need to go to Wollongong basically because of responsibilities I have at home which would make commuting/reloctaing to Sydney impossible AND b) I dont think my UAI is high enough anyway.

Thanks everyone for your help so far!

Correct. Generally students undertake 4 subjects for a full time load, this is the same whether you are doing a single or double degree so you are still doing the same amount of subjects.

Damn it.... how come engineering/maths requires 5 subjects per session?
